Other update:

I was digging through one of my parts bins and came across the remains of an old project. Here's said project filled with parts compatible with the watch I'm building:

Little 8 bit friend to sit on my desk while I work? It would be fun to have it notify me of things like incoming emails, replies to posts, SMSes, friend activities on various networks, etc. It also has an IO port on the back, so I could make it the base-station for my watch, to charge it and sync various bits of information (like new games!).

It's called Nibble.

There was a video of it working on a small screen, but i think it was removed. it looked pretty neat actually.
