Man, he's been so tight lipped about it (not that I'm complaining; I'm actually glad in a way...).

At this point I don't think it's going to be out until late 2009, or maybe even 2010, what with him working on Skymning too (which we've got even less info about, other than the fact that it's a Nicalis title and Nifflas is the lead designer).

Ah well, he sure can create atmosphere, and that's why I'll keep loving his games; they've certainly influenced my current game projects, especially one, which probably won't be released anytime soon either.

Woah, imagine if Nifflas teamed up with Cactus and konjak for a small project; that game would destroy us!  Atmosphere + Narrative + Action, all three done perfectly!

The Chzo mythology had an excellent scary atmosphere, especially Trilby's Notes.

1213 was atmospheric as well, especially the music cues.

I personally think Konjak is capable of creating pretty awesome things on his own (Gfx, music, programming etc). I don't see how Nifflas could have much input.

So azeo, what would you say the best Zero game is.

I'll argue 3, strongly argue, that is.  Beer!

It was the Zero series that got me hooked on action platformers, so it's definitely got a huge place in my heart.  Here's my heirarchy: 3 > 2 > 4 = 1  (I have different reasons for liking/hating 1 and 4, and 2 and 3 are almost equal IMO, with 3 being just that bit better overall.)

Actually I meant the first one. I liked it more then the others, because the concept was so fresh to me, and it was the first megaman game I ever actually beat. All the others just seemed to water down the formula, although they did include that awesome weapon stealing mechanic. Still, I had that entire game down to the penny. I could probably still turn it on right now and go and beat every boss without getting hit.

The whole of Lost Valley. It's so atmospheric that I can shut my eyes to it's mostly ripped (and actually quite badly used) graphics. THE Adventure game, it took some years from me to finish it :O

If you haven't seen this, at least try. http://mig3.ifrance.com/games/lost%20valley%20install.exe

Yeah, I thought you were referring to the first one, I just didn't know if you liked any of the others more.

I think the reason I like 3 the most was because it was the first one I played (my little brother bought it and said that I should try it...and thus began my action platformer addiction  Smiley).  Weapon stealing in 4 was OK I guess, it was the combination of datachips to search for, and the upgrade chips (as opposed to just upgrade elves in 1) that I like about 3.

[...]running from ultra low-poly monsters in Alone In the Dark.

Agree and agree.

The Dig has a great atmosphere. Quake too.
I have to mention Fallout 3 again. Lately I'm starting to feel like a fanboy

Yes this. The first time you exit the vault is pretty amazing. It's just like... "whoa. Okay it is really BIG out here. Um... I guess we'll go this way...? AH! That's radio-active!"

Good times.

And while we're speaking about cyberpunk, beneath a steel sky had a pretty great atmosphere too.

Second'd - One of my favourites. King's Quest, anyone? (probably already been mentioned... but hey.)

Here's one some of you might not have played:
Nelly Cootalot. Made by Ali, AGS user extraordinaire.
Download the game here!

It's definitely inspired by Monkey Island, but really has its own take on the whole "Let's be pirates" adventure game subgenre. Definitely one of the best non-commercial adventure game I've ever played.

There was a posting of World of Warcraft in this thread earlier which received a death threat... but I also think that's a great atmospheric game. In fact, its atmosphere is the reason I play it.

You can learn a huge amount about atmospheric lighting by playing WoW, because Blizzard uses color filters extensively. Just walk slowly between zones and observe how the graphics, and atmosphere changes as you approach. Sometimes they even change the lighting inside a zone to generate a certain feeling of a small area.
