That's the reason why I wanted to play WoW when I saw it the first time. The snow land of the gomes looks just so great.

Dunno if anyone has posted the Twilight Princess yet, but I thought the forest areas were pretty atmospheric

After over a year of lurking, I am forced to register and post:

The Quest for Glory series is very atmospheric, with hand-painted art and lovely palette-shifts to indicate time of day.  I'm especially fond of the Slavic/Lovecraftian setting of the fourth game:

Daggerfall is also very evocative:

And here's a screenshot of a city map in Daggerfall, which should give those who haven't played it an idea of the scale of the game: http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/7914/daggerfallmap1jg.jpg

Yeah, there wasn't a lot that I liked about it. EDIT:Let me rephrase that, there wasn't a lot that deviated to far from the standard FPS fare but it did a great job at polishing parts of the genre that it employed to a nice shine. It was pretty much just a really nice looking FPS with a few nice touches here and there. I do have to hand it to it though, the games drips of atmosphere.

Obviously Bioshock had its severe flaws from being a mainstream commercial game serving too many masters, but the plot twist really was excellent.

Yeah, the story in the game for all intents and purposes is extremely well written. I especially liked the audio bits that you picked up around the station. It kept you firmly in the story and didn't yank you out with frequent cut-scenes.

I still prefer system shock 2 to Bioshock. Thing is, I saw Bioshock and was all like "Awesome, let me play its "spiritual" predecessor" and then ended up liking it more. A lot more.

Thief I, II and III worked perfectly fine out of the box in XP for me. Except for HT and video codec issues.

That games seriously gives a new meaning to massive. Wiki:

Daggerfall is the largest Elder Scrolls game to date:
161,600 square kilometres
15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons
Morrowind is 0.01% the size of Daggerfall
Vvardenfell, the explorable part of Morrowind has 15.5 square kilometres (6 square miles)
Oblivion has approximately 41.4 square kilometres (16 square miles) to explore

In Daggerfall, there are 750,000+ non-player characters (NPCs) for the player to interact with, compared to the count of around 1000 NPCs found in Morrowind and Oblivion.

It should be pointed out that the geography and the characters in these later games are much more detailed.

Yeah, larger areas to explore doesn't make them likely less bland. That's why I prefer small but rich and diverse settings.

Yeah dagerfall was great and very immersive, only problem was dying because of a rat a bit too strong at the beggining or being stuck outside a city at night with a werewolf trailing you.

The shear size of Daggerfall was impressive but the main problem I had with it was the fact that all of the NPCs were only one of a few visual styles. It really took you out of the game when you talk to the same person a hundred times. I prefer Morrowind to Oblivion and Daggerfall mainly due to the fact that most of the NPCs are fairly distinct form each other (with the exception of the Imperial Guard and beast races). Not only that but Morrowind's environments are much more varied than Daggerfall or Oblivion.

Just played IGF entry Arc Aether Anomolies, and for a quick little FPS/Shmup thing it was really atmospheric.  Basically it's like playing the intro screen in Metroid Prime; really really cool!  So short though, with pretty simple gameplay too.  I'd just like to see a mid-to-full size atmospheric game made from these visuals because they're really really great.
