Ohhh, I didn't think of that at all. Alright, I'll try to think up some questions with more obvious answers.

cave story really isnt that important for the "indie scene" anymore i think, you'll probably have more luck with questions about more recent gams.

Captcha doesn't do the job so well. A forum I administrate is completely inundated with spambots (40-50 register daily), and CAPTCHA has done absolutely nothing to stop them. Mind you, neither has a question like the ones used here, so I'm not really sure what's more effective.

three people on the irc today all not getting their registration email using mainstream domains.
(might just be coincidence though, it's not like it's that unusual!)

I can only imagine how many have these issues that don't find their way to the irc to ask for help

I dunno if anyone has any clue what to do about it but some kind of official statement that it's being looked into would be nice rather than just having to tell them that we don't have any connection to the admins of the forums and nobody knows what the problem is

There's a bunch of email addresses that (i think) are automatically banned because they use a particular email host:

The list goes on for a few more pages.

I'm wary of removing these because REASONS; maybe tell them to just make a gmail account?

That's the standard thing to tell them but this last batch of people have all been using mainstream services like gmail and hotmail

Code:
[18:36] <map> if I had to make wild speculation it might have to do with me putting a full stop in my email address

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

and you know if someone's trying to sign up with a banned email address maybe they should be informed somehow rather than just not getting their email

are you sure it's actually a ban problem?

sometimes it's been because of banned email hosts, this time it's not. nobody can be sure what causes the problem, that's the point. we're left to speculation and whoever has the ability to look into it apparently isn't.

No one said it's a ban problem. It's a signup problem. They're all using gmail addresses too.

Signups have been terrible forever, not surprising they'd break entirely. The real problem is the lack of admin interest and the fact that the software never communicates the source of the failure or provides any means of finding help. Like schoq says, only tiny percent are going to end up in IRC, and on good weeks there's always a few. Today there's 5.

How long are these people waiting to receive the email? On some other forums I frequent, it would sometimes take me a day to receive an email (when registering or using a 'forgot my password' functionality)?

However, I can't remember if it was here or on another forum, but doesn't TIGSource use Gmail for sending out emails? If so, Gmail shouldn't work properly with SMF because of some SSL issue. Beyond that, it's up to an admin to check error logs and email settings (PHP or SMTP). Or just contact the host (though I think Matthew hosts it himself?).
