Maybe like tracking, bubbling, general monopolistic behaviors, and belief in an "open web".

I definitely prefer a YouTube link (or embedded video) to animated GIFs. Clicking a link to a thread and have my computer grind to a halt for half a minute while it loads a bunch of animated GIFs is really annoying. Example: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=30906.45 With a link or an embedded video, it won't start playing and downloading until you actually click play.

Some GIFs also tends to slow down the browser when there's too many of them on a single page, which is very common in the Creative forums.

Be the change you want to see in the world. Well, hello there!

It mostly happens on my netbook, but if I have multiple programs/windows running, I also get the slowdown on my laptop from time to time. Maybe it's my anti-virus that blocks the page from loading fully as it scans the GIFs or something. In any case, an embedded YouTube video would definitely be preferable.

EDIT: Also bear in mind that it'll load quicker if you've already visited the thread before due to caching. But your computer might just be better than mine. Grin

Pages with lots of GIFs load fine for me, but they rarely play back properly. With big ones like what's in that devlog thread, I'll normally see a few frames of normal playback, then it slows way down and starts playing out of order. As many issues as YouTube has, it's still more reliable than a GIF.

There's a way to do Youtube embedding where the user has to first click on an image which causes the Flash component to appear.  That way, it doesn't cause your browser to explode when loading a page with 20 embedded Youtube vids.

Chrome in particular has a terrible time with pages full of gifs:

I'll bring up the YouTube embedding idea with Matthew.

I'd like a way to turn this off if it gets implemented. I already have Flash turned off for performance reasons, but advanced HTML5 always causes major performance issues and tends to be really difficult to block properly.

YouTube automatically switches to HTML5 when Flash is disabled. It's determined to slow down your browser no matter what.

Vimeo has some sort of policy against gameplay footage, doesn't it?
