Hm... what about having the shotgun dip a frame after he goes back up, kind of a secondary action?
Like this? More or less. I was actually thinking of the tilt that you had before, but that works pretty well.

Sometimes I think its best for the player hardly to move at all when stopped, and just make him blink and perhaps even look at the screen as if waiting for the player's input

I admit, I'm not too happy about this one. But it's 2AM and I'm too tired to work on this stuff.

I like it but his face does nothing.. surely a force like that could make him blink and maybe even make his cap lift of his head a little?

It looks like the weapon is flexing where the stock meets the... The metal part. =)
I don't mind the expressionless firing, it makes him look like an angry badass. Like Clive Owen with a red beard and a trucker cap.

Looking rather nice. His short legs look weird, though, in my opinion.

He's kneeling. no, in general, his legs are weirdly proportioned. renton, i would definitely look into proportion problems now before you go too much further.. especially in that idle animation. his legs aren't in proportion with his torso. i second the "change his expression" sentiment. it should really help the feel of the animations if you add, say.. a slight flinch on the gunshot, or a blink in the idle animation. since he's a chain-smoking lumberjack, it'd be cool to throw a coughing animation into the idle animation mix, but that's just dreaming. it looks great. keep going.

Yeah, generally the pubic symphysis, the bones and cartilage that join your hip bones in the front, is the center point of the body. The distance from the top of the head to the crotch is about the same as from the crotch to the bottom of the feet. Your lumberjack has a super-long torso. The idle animation could use some leg movement for what he's doing. Also, ever see the street fighter idle sprites? They shift their weight from one foot to the other, back and forth, rather than up and down. If he's just breathing, the shoulders should shift up instead of down.

Also: Send me your "TIMBEEEEER!" yell recordings. If I like yours, you'll be Jack's voice. Looking for a gritty, manly voice. Clean and decent sound quality is a must.

Smithy, I really wanna put you in the game as an unlockable arena character. I'm gonna need some help from you, though.

I loved that game. Good times. One of the reasons I wanna change Jack's hat into a patrol cap.

Huh. I never played that game because the splash art turned me off, but it looks just like the Keen series that I played right to death. I missed out. Huh, there's even a mobile version of Dangerous Dave now. The standing-still-to-reload mechanic is pretty cool.
