In reading this interview with Richard Bartle I came across 3D Mailbox, which aims to give you one thing that gmail doesn't: wood. And sharks to eat your unattractive spam. EDIT: Thought I'd include their own checklist because it's fairly compelling: - World's coolest e-mail program
- Avatars represent your e-mail
