What if they weren't symmetric? One claw facing down from the version on top, and the viewer-facing one from the other? That might provide more indication that they're not guns, though I don't actually think that's a huge problem given their color.

These sprites are drawn to be used against a darker background that the board game or computer game versions. Still it's possible to do different floor tiles ok. Here's a mockup I've made tonight:

Brightened sprite colours (I am endlessly tinkering with them!) and added a test wall. Admit it, you want to play right now!!

Mind if I try to hack it into a free small HTML5 game?

Not at all, although the designs are copyright Games Workshop. Feel free to modify them as you see fit though.

I know, I also know they can be an ass about Copyright & IP. Working on some basic knowledge (never done browser based before). But I'm still not decided between using it as intended (turn based strategy) or a roguelike. But I shouldn't be taking-over your thread.

No worries, I'm happy people are commenting. Actually what I could do for help would be if someone has got any of these models and would be prepared to photograph then? I'm looking for who the models look in the 8 directions used from this kind of viewpoint. This would be as a reference for my own designs really rather than copying the Warhammer ones directly. Would anyone be able to help with that?

Sadly, the board game is at my brothers, else I would take some photos. http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest.htmThat page I found does have some photos of the board game, and different other miniatures from GamesWorkshop to compare them with. Most of those are painted, and from the site it's a bit unclear which are originals. But it contains pretty good photos, and every first photo at each miniature is a real one for sure. And if you scroll beyond the papercraft and lego stuff there are nice resolution scans of the boards and doors. http://imperiumbattles.com/SCMinisParts.htmlThis page also list some photos, but they are of lower quality, and won't be of much use I think. For reference, I know these are from the board game: Varius: http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/starquest.jpgSpace marines: http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/265503.jpg (painted, shows different weapon options) http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg.jpg (painted, shows different weapon options) http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/277775.jpg (painted, shows different weapon options) Android: http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/AndroidFront.jpghttp://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/AndroidBack.jpghttp://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/240956.jpgDreadnought: http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/Dreadnought.jpghttp://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/AndroidDreadnought.jpghttp://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/Dreadnoughts.jpg (from the expansion) Chaos marines: http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/138245_md.jpg (I'm unsure if the weapons match here) Orcs: http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/Orc.jpg (Only came in this stance, always took too much board space) Gretchen: http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/Gretchen.jpg (Minor variations on weapons are there, some can be seen fuzy in the back) Genestealer: http://zenseeker.net/BoardGames/StarQuest/265598.jpg (2nd photo on the site looks like a modification) No idea about the Eldar. Didn't have that expansion.

Thanks for all those links! Unfortunately I'd already found that page and used it for references myself.. I suppose it doesn't have to be the models of the board game, just a general warhammer model for the different types of faction would help if in the different angles.

I do have lots of fantasy models (Warhammer, HeroQuest and a few other board games). Would those help as reference? Or are you looking specifically for the future/space things?

As many as possible - always good for a reference for me as I tend to be a lot better at copying than imagining when doing art. Any help would be appreciated!

Quick test of the FieldOfView and wall drawing code: http://daid.eu/~daid/SpaceCrusader/Walk around with the cursor keys, place and remove walls with the mouse.

Pretty nice sprites. Maybe play a bit more with sizes? When you have a lot of different creatures and they are all the same size, it might become hard to tell them apart at a glance. Are you gonna do overlaps with the walls? But Gene stealer? What's that? They're called Soulsuckers. ( Some old-new art). Also, Chaos Android > Necron. Played a lot of Space Crusade back in the day. It was kind of wonky but still enjoyable in small doses. So exciting to run into stuff. Frustrating dice rolls!

Daid: That's impressive work already! Arne: They were called soulsuckers in the computer game, but genestealers in the board game I believe. Also some of the sprites (especially the genestealer) don't really look much like the board game miniatures!

P.s. Arne's colours and sprites for these would look super cool and probably totally different to my style. :D

Here's a test image of how the walls could look. If we overlap the sprites over the walls then we can have large chunky walls (like in the computer version) without the sprites themselves being overlapped by walls. The sprites weren't designed to be used against such bright colours, so would have to be tweaked a bit. Apart from that I think it looks OK... What do you think?
