I wrote a tutorial for beginners over at Tuts+ for making a simple tile engine. There are some topics that I don't cover that would help make the engine better (ie batching tile drawing and using 2d arrays for your map) but I wanted to keep it geared towards the beginner as much as possible. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, throw em at me.

Really appreciate the tutorial, especially because it is easy to port to other languages/technologies. Also you've now made me curious about this HaXe Smiley
