this is halfway true; after a few months of doing this with a small group of ~5 friends, we found that it was a good idea to segregate work and play hangouts. originally if someone started playing games, the whole hangout would tend towards that sort of activity and we'd never get anything done unless we dropped out (which i started doing a lot). but the way we do it now is that we work for X amount of hours, until someone wants to take a break and play something. then we take a 30-40 minute break (maybe do the spelunky daily) and head back to work right after.
it also depends on the type of people who get invited. people who you might really enjoy talking to might be a lot of fun to hang out with, but can also distract you from proper work. the best people to hangout with when trying to work on stuff are people who are similarly motivated.
