Wait! Don't run away yet! It's not what it looks like!Alright, so here's what I've been up to the past 4 months. An iPhone game I call Smiles. Here's the part that might scare you, but don't run yet! It is a matching game, BUT It's a gamers matching game. I know that's like saying vegetables taste like Candy, but urge you to at least take a look. http://www.smiles-game.com/Watch the video. If the corporate training video vibe throws you off, don't fret! There's only another 2 and a half minutes to go. Then you're free to mock me as a sell out, but *only* after watching the whole thing. Winners don't use drugs.

SELL OU- oh wait.
*watches video*
SELL OUT!
I'm surprised to say that this actually looks like a matching game I'd play, it seems to have quite a bit going for it. Pity I don't have an iPhone, maybe I'll twist one of my friends arms* into getting it so I can play the game**.
* Figuratively then if that fails literally speaking.
** Of course I only know one person with an iPhone so he's going to have a very sore arm.

Very purdy. Too bad I don't have an iPhone. How much does it cost? It doesn't even let you check the price on Linux...

Just looked.. it's $6 here in Australia, which presumably means that it's $5 in the US, which (believe it or not) is a higher-than-average price for an iPhone game at the moment.. though the big-name licensed-IP iPhone games (Spore, Force Unleashed, Monkey Ball, etc) are still charging far more than that.

You big fat whore, Mike! Looks very pretty and it's nice to bundle lots in the same package and make use of the tilt-sensor.

It's not any song in particular, just something I threw together for the video. The original is a little long and simple, so I could cut it down wherever I needed it. You can listen to/grab it here. You big fat whore, Mike! Oh noes! You found me out! AGH! Looks very pretty and it's nice to bundle lots in the same package and make use of the tilt-sensor. Yeah. I figured at least if I was going to sell/whore out, I'd go all out with it. But now that that's out of my system, I can start doing cool stuff... right?

You're right, I'm a whore. I just found this in one of my junk folders. After watching the mesmerizing video on the site, I downloaded Smiles yesterday. I have to say that this is one of the best match 3 games I've played in a while. I'm loving Zen mode in particular. My only plea is that I wish I could have multiple undos when I'm too stupid to plan ahead.

I'm glad you like it. Multiple undos probably wont make it in (since it would change the balance), but ya never know with sequels and spin offs. What you DO know about them is Graham will call you a whore for each.

I don't have an iPhone unfortunately, but I really like this spin on the match-3 game. The promo site/video was pretty cheesy though

Hi Mike,
I was just wondering how you get started with developing games for the iphone? is there a particular devkit/tools that you use, or just a generic apple sdk?

Now also a finalist in IGF Mobile. http://www.igfmobile.com/02finalists.html Still somewhat curious. What does that mean anywho? Even though not required to play, there "twitch play" elements to the game. In other words, if you're quick enough, tiles will stay afloat longer allowing you to chain together falling distance (an important technique for longevity). But it's done in such a way that it's not required, broadening the appeal of the game. I was just wondering how you get started with developing games for the iphone? is there a particular devkit/tools that you use, or just a generic apple sdk? Apple SDK and my own libraries. https://developer.apple.com/iphone/The game was mostly developed on Windows with OpenGL and SDL via an API/Library I wrote to fake several aspects of the iPhone. Most of the same code runs on both platforms. I still have (and use) a Mac for making iPhone builds.
