Yeah, what Hinchy said. Any casino level in a sonic game. It's a pity the new games don't have casino levels.

Also:

Such a random fight! WTF Still, I suppose it makes sense that the final fight against your rival would be in a gigantic robot battle.

yes to the milkman conspiracy!

I also loved the museum in Silent Hill 2 - definitely the best part of a superb game.

As for indie stuff, I loved the Abyss in Aquaria Smiley It was such a simple, brilliant concept for a location and was full of so many cool little touches. Also, what do you call that vectory level in Within a Deep Forest with all the overlapping platforms and colour coded ledges? I can't remember what it was called, but I really liked it.

I'd like to second The Milkman Conspiracy, and also suggest Black Velevetopia.
Don't forget Lungfishopolis! Rampaging around as a giant in a city populated by fish.  Oh yeah. That was awesome.
Actually, you know what? I kinda just want to say all of Psychonauts.

$20 on Steam!

I'd like to third The Milkman Conspiracy, and second Lungfishopolis; both fantastic levels.

I think Otogi and its sequel need more love. There was a great level in Otogi 2 called The Golden Sea, which had you jumping from one flying ship to the next. Here's an unexciting screenshot:

I mean, seriously, even Yahtzee liked Psychonauts. Contains spoilers:

Quote from: Wikipedia
Ben Croshaw: "I'm just going to list out of context some of the things that occur in Psychonauts: A telekinetic bear, a dentist who harvests brains, a sequence wherein you become a giant Godzilla style monster and terrorize a society of talking fish, and a shadowy trench coated government agent who disguises himself as a housewife by brandishing a rolling pin and talking disjointedly about pies. A game that features all of these thing simply cannot be criticized... it's against the law or something."

Also, I though the first level/tutorial was pretty good to.

I dunno, it might be a bit mainstream for you guys but I think the first level of Call of Duty 4 warrants mentioning.

It is the most elegantly scripted level I have ever played through. Its not terribly hard or long, but its so incredibly cinematic and well executed that I certainly consider it a 'great level in game history'

The level where you have to invade a city/rescue a downed chopper pilot/survive a nuclear explosion is pretty epic too. Aside from maybe portal, the single player CoD4 campaign is probably the best scripted and most engaging FPS experience I've had with this generation of games.

Though LoZ: Twilight Princes isn't my favorite game, the Twilight Palace has to be my favorite level in any game, I just simply love the style.

I also vote for all of Psychonauts- such a wonderfully creative game. I'd also like to add Bob-Omb Battlefield from Mario 64, and Gusty Garden from Mario Galaxy. The flying colossus in the desert was particularly memorable for me, as was the knight (you know which one I mean). Oh, and any stage from Gitaroo Man- that game is genius.

Especially

Bob-omb Battlefield gets my vote, too. Playing it for the first time, I just felt like I was witnessing a new era in gaming!

I don't know, to me the

stands out as the highlight of that game. Not that it had any bad levels.

I'd have to add the tanker level for Metal Gear Solid 2, as well. I know the MGS series is famous for (if nothing else) integrating story and gameplay, but that level played out almost like a movie.

And I have to make the obligatory Milkman Conspiracy mention. That one's hard to top.

Ah, speaking of Zelda again, in Wind Waker when you first go to Hyrule and everything is black and white. That's pretty cool.

And I still need to play Psychonauts.

I can't believe I forgot about that level. Kojima knows his climaxes.

On a related note, Act 5 of MGS4. Most of the real gameplay was in Act 4, but Act 5 did a great job of bringing everything to a close.
