The space levels in Bonesaw!
Seriously, it's the pinnacle of platformer level design, I doth say!
On a similar note, the Great Cave Offensive in Kirby Super Star was great.

On a similar note, the Great Cave Offensive in Kirby Super Star was great.
I can agree with both of these, although I liked the Lava levels of Bonesaw more.


La Mulana is filled with awesomeness. I couldn't find any good pictures, but my favorite area is by far the Chamber of Birth. It's just so vibrant and cheerful, even though everything is trying to kill you.

Can't find a picture but Black's Dice Maze from Gunstar Heroes.
You pick up and throw the dice then move around a game board to progress to the boss. Each space on the board has a different little platform-brawler minigame thing.

Resident Evil 4, the Farm House. 'Nuff said.

Katamari Damacy, Roll up the Moon. This level was the culmination of everything wonderful about the game and nothing in any of sequels really felt quite as great.

Super Mario RPG, Boosters Tower!!!! This was so level fricking awesome and totally the inspiration for so much in the Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi series's.

How has NO ONE said the last level of Rez: Mind Killer.  That was quite possibly the most incredibly video game experience of my life...and no, I'm not using hyperbole here.  The music and the level, with the narrative happening every little bit, was absolutely incredible.  I truly felt "at one" with the game, and totally hooked to it; wonderful feeling, and there really is something perfect about that level that you must experience it for yourself (that's why I'm not linking to a video; doesn't begin to do it justice).

Oh, and that whole Arsenal Gear sequence was also really really good; I love that I still don't know what about it was real and what was virtual.

Agreeing with the La-Mulana level love. I can't think of any areas I didn't like (except maybe that really annoying climb in the tower of the goddess...)


Link to the Past Ganon's Tower was cruelly difficult to 7-year-old me, but I can appreciate its twisted challenges now.

Not a very good map for a start and then every other server was spamming it to the point where it become disgusting. Sad

Shit, I completely forgot to mention this! Stage 5 of Rez is pretty much perfect in every way. Even playing it again in Rez HD, it hasn't lost its charm.

On a related note, Act 5 of MGS4. Most of the real gameplay was in Act 4, but Act 5 did a great job of bringing everything to a close.

Speaking of bringing things to a close, I'm nominating the final disc of Shenmue 2. I think there's a pretty even split between people who loved the last section, and people who hated it, but when taken on its own, as an example of how gaming can do things that don't involve killing stuff or solving puzzles, it's unarguably pretty special.

R-Types third stage totaly blew my brains straight out like nothing had done before and i think nothing has ever since. It was just love in a game i already loved.

Then of course all levels except Infero Cavern in La Mulana.

This level is awesome. It's so fun to play because you ride on Polar while being chased by the giant polar bear. Also, this level has a lot of secrets.


Once you learn how to control the jet pack these levels are awesome. It is especially fun to ignore crates and try to get to the finish as fast as possible. And the music is... I think the music is the best thing with these levels.
