It's a tapogrifacle. It has a manatee and a hamster on board.

Tapogrifacle is now on my Christmas wish list. Also manatee too. (and hamster, but that's nothing new)

It is indeed awsome.

I happen to know that the manatees name is Farenheit. Look:

That's a Dugong, not a manatee.  Smiley

Yeah. There's a little misinformation about the dugong/manatee relationship on the internet (and also about the prettyness of the dugong).

It's a 3d version of a generic hopping blob enemy. Technically, it wasn't inspired by Quite Soulless. That or this is proof that people have always known about Quite Soulless at some level.

JLJac- Oh my god. I don't think I've laughed so hard in weeks. I kept scrolling downward, being increasingly shocked at how long that monstrosity was... but you're right. I think it must be a fahrenheit, not a manatee. I don't know what I was thinking before.

Policedanceclub- that reminds me of a really atmospheric children's book I read once about a British explorer who discovers a secret land where giants live.

Gorgoo- I like both the picture and the style.

I just had an awsome idea for a game. Or it's not a game actually as much as... just sit down and listen ok?

It consists of nothing but a squareish level, or basically just a long floor with walls in both ends. In the beginning of the level you can place different creatures on this floor. You can also place pieces of food.

All the creatures have different stats. They also have a certain place in an "eatlist", meaning that they will eat some creatures, and be eaten by others.

The stats are:
Speed: How fast it runs
Stamina: How long it can run
Jump: How high it can jump
Sight: At how long distance it can spot food and predators
Hearing: At how long distance it can notice predators when eating or doing some other specific activity
Stomach: For how long time after eating it will be full
And maybe some more.

The creatures need food or they will starve to death. After they have eaten they will not hunt for a little while, but look for a partner to mate.

Your goal with the game is to create a small eco system that is supposed to work for as long as possible. After placing everything you click start and just sit back and watch them eat each other. When the last animal dies your time is saved, and that is your score. The hard part is to create a balance that is going to hold for as long as possible.

I figured I could start with just a few creatures, and maybe later add more. Here's the ones I figured would fit:

Tapogrifacle is a given. It has poor sight and hearing, and can eat few other animals, but it can fly into safety. Also it can lay uneatable barnacle eggs.

Gnarf's cat with insect mandibles
Pretty straight forward predator with good hearing and speed. A bit small to kill a tapogrifacle though.

Sparkys parrot bat larva
Weak, but will be out of reach in the air always except when eating.

Lazers skull squid
Slow, but don't need to run since it can drag itself into the skull. Need to find the carcass of a dead animal to lay it's eggs in the skull. Can't jump.

Jad's headphone chimp? (Don't know if this fits in, since it's an existing creature Huh? But the awsomeness of a skullsquid with a monkey skull with the headphones still on is so... awsome Huh?)
Pretty all around, good at most things. None at all hearing though.

I think I can put the game togheter, but would be thankful if someone helped me out with the spriting, since it's really time consuming. Do you like it? Give me your thoughts, gentlemen Gentleman

Yes! And this is why the theme for the next compo must be either the "zero player games", "sandbox games", or the "playful god" idea...

Have you thought about adding slight random mutations of the stats for offspring creatures?  Well, hello there!

ecosystem idea

I had an idea really similar to this a year ago.  The main difference was that it was an underwater plankton-ey world instead of a land-based ecosystem.  Unfortunately, at the time I could barely program (and I received the discouraging feedback of "so... it's an aquarium?"), so the game somehow ended up as a clone of Fishy. Undecided
