Looks like some solid updates. Seems like it's worth the price now. Gotta give props to the developers for staying and making this into the game that they envisioned.

it isn't. they just added in a bunch of standard minecraft genre features to appease people who demanded them. the game is actually less interesting now (imo).

Can you do massive in-atmosphere dogfights flying through canyons like was in the launch trailer a few years ago yet or do the ships still fly like absolute ass?

Are the menus also still an exercise in futility?

There're minor improvements, but it's still really bad. Can you do massive in-atmosphere dogfights flying through canyons like was in the launch trailer a few years ago yet or do the ships still fly like absolute ass?
Combat is not the focus of this game, but now you can fly as close to the ground as you want. If there are canyons or the caves are big enough you can fly through them, but don't expect something like Elite Dangerous. There's also pvp to consider now. well it certainly looks cool. But I hope exploring is more interesting
it isn't. they just added in a bunch of standard minecraft genre features to appease people who demanded them. the game is actually less interesting now (imo). That's unfair. None of the new systems are all that intrusive (you can ignore base building if you want to) and there are a lot of quality of life improvements for exploration, like not having to refuel your life systems at every 10 seconds. They also added things like exotic planets and new unique terrain features.

NMS is a good study on what happens to a game with no clear design or game loop. I'm not being an ass - or, rather, I'm not just being one - but it's unreal how unfocused this game is and how much it suffers from it
Two years later and we're left with an incredibly menu-heavy game with some of the worst menus in the genre. Our goal is to survive, explore, and reach the center of the galaxy - or it's to build bases and trade? We have a laser. We can laser rocks so that the laser is better at being a laser - but why would we?
There's a good game somewhere in here, but it requires a massive, George Lucas-esque cutting down of all the crap and "me too!" features.

Yeah, I tried this game again the past couple of nights. Base building just means you spend a ton of time pointing your laser at rocks. In terms of discovery there is still no point. Go to some building and solve a rudimentary "puzzle". Every time I get a number problem that is like "1234 - 2341 - 3412 - ? ? ? ?" I'm a little insulted. I don't know, there is just so much more that they could have done. I wish instead of base building they tried to implement more advanced procedurally generated puzzles or something. It would be cool if each planet or solar system had a central puzzle or conflict to solve. They took the aesthetic of the old sci fi novel covers and never opened the book. That old school sci fi is interesting not just because of the vistas but because of the alien societies and conflicts. I know something like that would be difficult, and no one wants a cookie cutter radiant quest system, but I wish Hello Games chose to be a stalwart of procedural generation in other areas besides aesthetics. At least games like Caves of Cud and Dwarf Fortress are trying, even if the results are a bit silly sometimes. On another note: when I mentioned to my wife that there was an update coming out for NMS and that I might try it, she said, "Oh, is that the game where nothing happens?"
