I was thinking it would be a really cool thing if any new users were unceremoniously ignored when they tried to register for the forum, relying on a manual email from a bunch of disinterested moderators to allow them access. I think this is definitely a good way to build community and is clearly the most sane way to deal with a single individual who might want to spam the forums with dumb stuff.

It would also be cool if the IRC channel was controlled by some jerk who arbitrarily bans regular members he doesn't like and then doesn't hang out there ever.

Those are things that would make TIGS a really cool community that has its best days ahead of it.

Yeah, the admin approval for registration was probably an overreaction and should be repealed (tho it did stop sigvatr from posting gay porn everywhere). Forum activity's gone way down since it was implemented in November (from ~12k posts a month to 6k); it's the lowest it's been since July 2008:

The IRC should definitely contain nobody with any authority or ability to help solve problems on the forums, even though being unable to register means it's the only place to ask for help. Also the IRC should be controlled by someone who bans people and refuses to unban them, and is never around to solve problems.
