I'm also experiencing Xerus' x64 woes on my home PC. I got to play a little bit on my work PC, and it seemed interesting. Not enough happening in the Chapter to get a feel for what the game's about though. I'll definitely have a proper go on Monday.

For those XP64bitpeeps, could someone give the following exeuctable a try?

http://ded.johnmarkkearney.com/~locus/Mirror%20Stage-i386.zip

just copy it into the MS folder, and see if it works.  if it doesn't work, let me know if there's anything outputted in a stdout.txt or stderr.txt.  I'd be awfully obliged.

(I'm trying alex's (easy) suggestion before dealing with the harder ones...)

No dice, I'm afraid; Still gives me, "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). Click on OK to terminate the application." Can't see any stdout or stderr files being created either, neither in the game directory, or any of the root directories.

I did play the game at work, though. Only got to the start of the 3rd chapter (Thanks to a queue at the sandwich shop), but what I played so far was definitely interesting. I like the narrative structure; my one gripe so far would be that it's paced a little too slow. Several of the stages in the second chapter are repeats of the same 'walking through the mirror' puzzle. Then again, without having played further, I don't think I'm in a position to talk about the pacing. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow!

I also encountered this problem.

But now I'm going to see if it works on my laptop!

Okay, giving this a final push now.

In order to try track down the XP 64 bug, I've put together a group of small test programs that load various different dlls and drivers.

They can be downloaded here (10mb)

try running the programs in each of the directories.  if any don't run/crash, make a note.  let me know which, if any, of the programs run, and which don't.

once a program opens, it should either display an image, or a red triangle.  You can press escape to exit them.

(further to this, if any programs do not run, check if there is anything interesting left in the stdout.txt or stderr.txt files in the directory)

I'd really friggin appreciate any help I can get with this.  You xp64guys have been pretty obliging so far.

Okay, I think I have some useful results. I didn't know whether it was important to note which programs display the image and which displayed a red triangle, so I took note. Here are the results:

1: Pass
2: Pass
3: Pass (Triangle)
4: Pass (Triangle)
5: Pass (Triangle)
6: Pass (Triangle)
7: Pass (Triangle)
8: Pass (Triangle)
9: Pass (Triangle)
10: Pass (Triangle)
11: Fail (No output)
12: Fail (No output)
13: Pass (Triangle)
14: Pass (Triangle)

Everything ran apart from 11 and 12, which were the builds which used Lua. That's obviously where the problem lies; sadly, neither the standard build nor the debug build gave any useful output; they didn't even get as far as opening stderr and stdout files. I just got an Application Error dialogue box which read 'The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). Click on OK to terminate the application.'

Also: Opera Omnia crashes with the same error.

Hope this helps.

wow. that's fantastic.  I can't think of a better place for error messages to come up :D

thank you soooo much.

(i only use lua with the config file, to store, like, 4 numbers, so Smiley  )

you'll probably hear more from me later on.

could you try replacing the lua5.1.dll file in the 11/12 directories with this one and let me know what happens?

EDIT:  Please try these two extra tests (1.5mb) as well.  (I link statically instead of using DLLs)

11 and 12 both fail with and without the new dll. 15 and 16 both work.

XP64 people, could one of you check that this runs (22MB)?

(if it does; I can get the release out within half an hour of getting word...)
