Hi there,

Tiny Tires is a Micro Machines-inspired arcade racing game with local multiplayer, made in Unity. Hopefully it'll stand on its own as a simple, varied little modern version of the old 90s arcade racers.

Update! 04/02/2018
Wow! It's been a while! I took a looooong break from this, but I finally feel like I'm ready to work on this little game again.

Here's a video of what the game looks like after the last month of new assets and some behind-the-scenes code updates:

Platforms: OS X, Windows and Linux

Links
twitter (for the most frequent updates, follow me there)
Dev Log
tinytires.com (Nothing to see there yet. Move along..)

What's in now:
  • 1 track!
  • AI is functional, but just follows waypoints so far. He does nothing to avoid obstacles and gets stuck on walls.
  • Driving is getting to a place where it feels good, turning is precise, but the physics are wonky in places.
  • Camera modes! There are two of them, one is the classic MM top-down which'll be the default. And a camera that shows all players on screen at once.. which might be useless in the end.
  • Gamepad support

To do:
  • A lot!
  • At least five tracks in total.
  • Collision avoidance for the AI
  • Menu system
  • Gamepad support
  • 2-4 player local multiplayer

Oh, and a video capture of a bit of driving around. Still trying out various screen capture software, but QuickTime is actually pretty decent!

Cool, a Micro Machines Inspired game.
I would love to play this game. The video looks pretty good.

I hope you will spend a lot of time tweaking the driving gameplay.
If the driving itself is fun, everything will be fun.

Have you considered an online multiplayer ?
I think only 4 players max could play the original Micro Machine.
What would happen if 100 players could play together in one race like that ?  Smiley

Haha, yes. I absolutely want to do online multiplayer, but holy shit.. That shit is complicated! Might be out of my league, programming-wise. I am but a hobbyist..

Local multiplayer, though, is definitely going in at some point!

Tuning the driving is top priority! I hope it'll feel good. Smiley

Nice! This looks extremely fun. It's been a while since I've seen a MM style game with enough variety and emergence...

Design question: How are you going to mark the checkpoints so people can't cut through the track?

There'll be obstacles to make sure the players don't cut through the track. So the tracks will be walled up eventually, apart from the edges. I mean, it's not a MM style game if you can't fall off the track! Tongue

Yay! I hope I can live up to everyone's insanely positive opinion of Micro Machines, haha..

You know what's pretty awful? Unity only supports 4 controller. So Unity is apparently worse than the Sega Genesis..

Oh, and gamepad support is now in. Though I managed to botch the keyboard controls, they're now *way* too sensitive with the new control script I'm using.. Sad

Just slowly going through the items I want in the first track.  Here's a pencil!

And so the track starts to look like something, slowly..

If I could make a request, I'd like to see a "behind the car" type of view.

Putting a coffee mug in put a stopper on the AI dominating over me all the time. Now I guess I need some actual obstacle-avoiding for the AI..

hogge, I might put that in at some point. Request noted! Smiley

Thanks! Many people have mentioned RC Pro Am. Going to have to play that.

Here's a progress update on the blueprint track, with the coffee cup.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

MM was one of my all-time favourites; was a big fan of the multiplayer mechanic regarding the viewport, but it was frustrating at times, will you be doing something similar?

Yay! Awesome. :D

oodavid, I'll definitely be doing something similar to the MM multiplayer knockout mode.

PS. I hope you'll buy it for more than a dollar.. Wink

Nice, looks like a lot of fun! I kinda prefer the more saturated colors from the previous screenshots though...

Awesome! one of the things I struggle with in the devlogs is knowing what platform people are developing for - I might buy it for more than a dollar, as long as it doesn't mean forking out for a console / OS I don't have Wink
