Yeah, basically.  It'd save a few steps, but I'm not sure how the rest of the game would react to low quality.  I'd specifically be worried about the rotation of the eyes.  No reason to make that wonkier than it already is.

Additionally, I think taking the low-quality approach in another game would cause issues if you were using an anti-aliased font.  With a pixel font, of course, that's not a problem.

Well if you rendered the eyes on a small size then they would appear pixelated, otherwise you could just render the eyes on top of the enlarged bitmap

I love this kind of games. I found all the endings, but it was sad that that was all there was to it.
