It's not really the shape of the eyes you see as much as the round reflecting surface of the iris. But I'm not sure I really pulled it off, I'm actually not good enough to work with that complicated optical phenomena Roll Eyes Any tips?

Super Bloomy Flare (serves 6)
* Add the first layer, set to additive blend, and draw a high saturation blob that falls off at the edges
* Add the second layer, set to additive blend, and draw a smaller white blob that falls off at the edges
* Serve

I stopped scanning my drawings because it gets pretty unmanageable after a while.

Hm... If I wanted it bloomy I would just use a soft brush, but then it tends to look like if the eyes are actually glowing, and I don't want that. This effect appears bloomy on a photo, but if any of you have seen it in real life you propably know that the edges look much sharper to the eye. I don't want it to look like a glow, but like a reflection Huh? Ah this is hard stuff... Thanks for the critique though Smiley Does anyone know what I am trying to achieve or is this just something I have made up in my own mind?

Make a circular selection/mask, paint a solid color (yellow/orange, usually), highlight with lighter shade and white (in a linear gradient sort of way, at an oblique angle, plus some extra on the contours), and add some 'bloom' in separate layer on top. That's what I would do.

edit:

Not sure if this hits the spot.

This is what happens when I'm ill, tired, and still trying to doodle. I call it "Total Crap"!

I apologize ahead of time for any permanent mental trouble this image may cause. Crazy
I tried to tell the stupid creature she's standing on not to eat the fungus, but look, he tried anyway, and he's suffering, so serves him right.

Inky ink on sketch paper if it matters for such a doodle as this.

Edit: I can't believe I just posted this thing!

JLJac-
I know what you mean about the reflections in animals' eyes. I think the part of what makes that effect so neat is that sometimes when the animal you're looking at is close by, you actually catch a different reflection in each of your eyes, so it's like viewing two mismatched images at the same time.

I love the texture and color in that drawing you did, by the way.

Edit-
Here's a quick mock-up I did a while ago of a random game idea.

Am I imagining things, or are Annabelle and Arne slowly becoming the same person?
Looks pretty good though.

I'm gonna have to 2nd the request for Catnoises linking the comic. I also really like Dormouse's monster, though the lady's face looks slightly mong. Is her mouth in the wrong place?

I dunno...Annabelle seems more focused on flat, solidly-colored & shaded characters, whereas Arne goes into ridiculous mechanical/organic detail (usually using dashes of paint) and...well, panties, obviously. Annabelle's characters also have eyes that either are vertical lines or have clearly defined borders between the scerla and the rest of the face.

JLJac, why are you not writing these down in your OP?

It's a bit of a homage to Annabelle's stuff, but also the Nendoroid figurines and a bunch of other sources of chibi I've picked up ideas from. Love small feet like that. As for the colors/rendering, I tend to push the volumes more with gradients and highlights, but I'm trying to be more flat nowdays.

SNK's Whip + Spelunker + Indiana Jones =

It looks like he's wearing lipstick on the sprite, but I didn't want any of that so I made it his nose. Drew a mouth too, with a little lip hook like they did in old Japanese cartoons.

Man, this thread's put the Inspiration in me. This was the first completely digital drawing I ever did:

And here's a cormic of a dream I had:

I really need to get into the habit of drawing every day though; people who have that kind of dedication never cease to amaze me.
