I'm working on the look for my new game. It's going to be a strategy game set in a jungle.
Right now I'm torn between two styles for the characters. The world is going to be 3D - not necessarily looking like this but a 3D world is much easier to work with for me.

The pixel character is from Fire Emblem so it's much more stylized than the stock 3D model I have here. The final 3D model would probably be more fun looking. I'd like the game to be pretty colorful and lush.

The pixel characters are billboarded so they always point at the camera, so that they won't look like cutouts. Both characters receive the lighting and shadows of the world the same way.

It's a cool aesthetic and there are several examples of games that have done it well like Okhlos:http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=34910.0.

Just keep experimenting until you're satisfied with the style. Grin
