Ok, I'm sorry for the new topic, but I have to say this.

I just finished Portal. The ending made me cry. I'm a weepy kind of person.

But seriously, isn't it amazing? The music is so beautiful, somehow so touching! But you have to play the whole game to actually get a feel for what she's saying.

Man, what a glorious game. I don't think any game has ever drawn me into it so much.

Did anyone go through the same? And why do you think it's so poignant?

I didn't cry, I laughed. The song was funny. Undecided

The cake, Glados says it was delicous and moist.

That's my favorite part.

Oh and.

The ending was fantastic. I don't know how you managed to get this far without spoiling it.

Now you need to download and play Portal TFV mappack. It too has a great ending. And a great middle. And a great beginning. In fact the whole thing is great. Unfortunately their story elements were taken out when the maps were ported to the 360 for Portal: Still Alive, which is a shame because I was totally down with their suppositions.

Portal made, and makes, me want to laugh and cry at the same time. Both. For different reasons though. Although> I am unable to though. As I am in the wrong kind of a mood for that though! lol.  :D

This was a triumph...
I'm making a note here...
Huge success...

There's still experiments to do...
On the people who are still alive...!

I thought the song was funny, I don't think it's crying material.

Good thing I saw this thread, it made me remember I still had to end Portal. So I just did Hand Thumbs Up Left Grin

And the ending is amazing. The song is awesome, but for me the best moment is the confrontation with Glados. It's lines are real good.

"Why don't you marry it you love it so much?"
"I invited your best friend the Companion Cube, but it won't come, because you killed him. I also Invited your other friends, but they won't come, because you don't have any."
"You are not a scientitst, you are not even a full-time employee."

I hated when she said that.

There's certainly humour in the ending song but I definitely think there's emotion in there too. I played through the game in one sitting and got really drawn in, and I think by the end you definitely start to fear/hate GLaDOS, the voice actress did such a damn good job. The song is further taunting from her, "and when you're dying I'll be still alive" is just kinda creepy really.

So great, I'm not alone!

Crazy4Fez, that was pretty cool!

Cymon, that's awesome! I'll have to try those! I might go for some of the advanced levels before though Smiley

What I think touches me the most is GLaDOS's duality (didn't actually know that was her name). It seems like she has some weird job she is forcing herself to do, but then sometimes there are things that pass through that barrier, and that come off as her actually being fond of you.

Near the end, she really seems like a real person, who is imensely jealous, or hurt by your apparent disinterest. It's like she can't help herself. And picking up all personalities of hers - especially the last one - is particularly freaky.

And then... the ending. Seriously, it is absolutely grand. I heartily recommend Portal to just about anyone.

Plus, if you get Portal, you can probably come and play Battlegrounds 2 and Zombie panic Wink

[GLaDOS's] voice actress did such a damn good job.

Waaait, it wasn't speech synthesis?

Haha, no. That was Ellen McLain, the same voice actress that made the ending song, the TF2 narrator and the HL2 overwatch.

It was surely edited to sound like speech synthesis though...

According to developer commentary, it was. What they did was they ran the dialogue through a synthesizer, had Ellen imitate the synthesizer, and then synthesize that.

The ending credits is a whole treasure chest of different emotions!

First...
 Sad
Then as the song progresses...
 Smiley
As it continues...
 Sad
And at the end...
 Shocked
When it's done...

The advanced levels never quite cut it for me - glados just made about that entire game for me. Her absurd personality combined with Ellen Mclain's amazing voice acting is simply awesome. Also, the whole damn thing is filled with pretty fun easter eggs.

And I couldn't stop laughing when I heard the ending song. Such a bloody shame I spoiled it for myself just because so many people were talking about. Jonathan Coulton's song writing is just pretty awesome.

I agree. Most because I sucked at them, but partially because I play games for the story, not the challenge. I'm just not hard core enough. That's why I'm indie.
