MORE CHARACTER ART & PAGES INCOMING!

Not a big update this week, been busy polishing gameplay stuff that are still half baked so far. Instead you get to see some lovely art instead of Brock and Xia-Yee!

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/973257325480837120

Looks like you guys have been working on this one for a while. Love how fluid your gameplay looks! I see a hint of old school sonic throughout! Best wishes for it's completion!

I forgot to quote your post before, apologises! D:

But a big thank you still for the kind words! :D

While not the most technically impressive, there's something about your art and gameplay that is really genuine and full of character. I always look forward to updates of your game Smiley

VIDEO LINK!

Like the tweet says, close to the end here. After that all that'd be left is planning out the dialogue changes as you progress further in the game.

Aw thanks a lot! There is a lot of love put into this and I'm always happy when we hear that people can see that ^^

For today's Screenshot Saturday, we've got some ingame sprites of Angelika, the owner of the weapons shop and Brock's younger sister.

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/980083040339877889

Please do not bully younger siblings and be sure to give them the player 1 controller!!!!

Take a glance at this world map screen! We're not only super proud how the art turned out for this, we also love how the music for it is as well! Give it a listen over on twitter.

Okay nothing too major to show off today. First up some more character art of the first two bosses, Pummell Van Gunzhell and Cassandra Honeypot;

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/984129704834797573

It's funny how these two are fairly old characters but I never got any art for them done until now, well at least people seem to be liking them!

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/985156470390968320

And this well, it might look like a shield but it's actually the invincibility powerup! Thought what with the checkpoint being a tiki torch that I might as well go with flames to signify invulnerability for the player Tongue

Hey Aki-at! This is awesome! I definitely see the Sonic influences.

How far are you with the game?

It's been 3 years since you began it right?

Showing off the power ups, think I'm just about done with how they function, all that's left now is to perhaps add a couple of animations (Like the POP when the bubblegum hits) and some specific soundeffects!

Hey Sam, thanks! I'm glad you're liking it.

It's hard to put down a number on the game and even harder after I'm going back and cleaning up certain things and remaking other stages, I'd say possibly something between 30% - 40% completion? It was much further in the past but somethings I won't so happy about that forced me to redesign a bit of the game.

In terms of production, the project has been going since 2009, you can read up a bit more on the history of the project and how I came about below. Hope it's an interesting read! Smiley

So this time... I'm just sharing a bunch of art and character profiles!

Time to start introducing some NPCs, first up Mimi the catgirl maid!

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/987693185039192065

I think we might start sharing more art on some of the NPCs we've got in the game, or at least the more interesting one. As with the heroes, we're trying to create an interesting group of characters the players can talk just to give the feeling of a real town they're part of. Give a click on the twitter link to see a couple more images of her design!

Prepare yourselves for a fight most fearsome

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/989203134554648576

The next update has us throwing in the villains to the mixer, the website's been updated with their character profiles so head over there and have a look. Hoping these guys look as cool and charming as our heroes, no game is complete without bosses you want to beat!

(Click the image below for youtube or the link below it for twitter and hear some satisfying popping sounds!)

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/990286469729308677

Finished off one of the power ups, the strawberry bubblegum bullets that inflate and have a larger area of attack. I think the baddies will refer to this as a bit of a bubblegun crisis if you ask me!

Also testing out geforce experience and whilst I'm loving this GIF quality, I think the fact it's just under 15 mbs means this will be the only one I'll be gif-ing Tongue

Not a major update, just wanted to show some changes to the cutscene presentation, this time characters expressions will change depending on what they're saying to give players a better feeling of the mood of the dialogue! Also some slight changes to the stage one's background!

This looks fantastic, so much awesomeness in here!! Can't wait to play this one at some point :D

Older Mega Man games were always quite difficult and required lots of precision, and Sonic was almost too fast and the controls felt a bit sloppy; your game seems to be right in the middle! Reminds me a bit of Noitu Love's true indep_spirit... - Also, Brock looked a bit like an inverse version of King K. Rool to me. /just some thoughts

/not really Mock Anger

Really glad you're liking what you've seen! Yeah I've been inspired by both the Megaman and Sonic series but I've tried to feel like a good balance between the two (Although another big influence was Quackshot!)

And King K. Roll was just a misunderstood hero, reptiles usually are. You think Godzilla likes breaking things? He was just on his annual holiday to Japan when they started firing rockets at him! Tongue

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/995258031737786369

Fixed up the invincibility power up, the only thing I might change is making the flame blue instead of red to better contrast between itself and Brock himself.

Oh yes, that boss screen is awesome and the FM tune sounds fantastic too!

Thanks a bunch! We're trying our hardest to remain faithful to Yamaha YM2612 and you can read about the process more in our blog post there. Needless to say, we're super hyped seeing how the soundtrack has come along :D

(...didn't know about Quackshot, but had Magical Quest on the SNES, still a fine game today, a bit slow maybe)

Yeah Disney had a lot of great games back in the 90s! I think my favourite on the SNES has to be Aladdin although being a Donald Duck fan meant I had a soft spot for Donald in Maui Mallard Tongue

Another week and another few updates to post!

Home Sweet Home

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/999349995479412736

This week's website update, I talk more about the hub town and throw in some pieces of concept art for both the buildings you can find in there and the NPCs that inhabit the area. http://brockcrocodile.com/2018/05/23/just-poppin-down-to-the-shops/

Angelika workshop implemented!

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/1000414509016625153

Well... almost implemented, still a lot of work left to be done but it's coming along nicely, click the link above to see the video on Twitter!

Finally, bit old if you've been following us on Twitter already but we uploaded the full track for the world map song on youtube, give a listen, hoping you all like it!

Oh sweet, it definitely has the original vibe to it, and sounds very energetic and raw, love that kind of sound!

Recently I got a bit into those older FM Yamaha chips as well and built a small YM3812 (OPL2) board to play around with the original hardware. It sounds awesome and is beautiful tech Smiley

Oh man you've got to share what you've made, I'd love to give it a listen!

Totally! Aladdin was actually my first SNES game and i remember playing it on that Sunday morning, simply magic Smiley The animations and almost everything from that era was awesome. Maui Mallard looks great as well, really need to play that one too, thanks for the hint; rediscovering these older games...

Yep, a lot of these older titles are a chief inspiration for this game, an accumulation of all I've learnt playing them!

So we've uploaded last time's update, Angelika's weapon shop, onto our youtube channel now! :D

Next up, this week's website update!

Time to make a splash!

https://twitter.com/BrockCrocodile/status/1004424431450673160

Almost done with the hub town itself, layout is complete and all the background assets done, just now need to have some of the NPCs finished and the coding that let's you visit the individual houses! Check it out on the website with a couple more pieces of art for some of the NPCs: http://brockcrocodile.com/2018/06/06/a-place-to-call-home/
