There is a whole lot to do right now. Gameplay planned:
Characters' projectiles attack most similarly to Andy, Terry and Joe from Fatal Fury
Central world map similar to Super Mario Bros 3, with 5 levels of 3 sub levels each, of 13 "screens" wide each. Selecting levels can be done in any order similar to MegaMan, with the 5th final level being the exception
Power-ups and health-ups can be collected; affects active character only
You can fight on the same level until all your characters are wiped out

Thanks I'll try to update this often The animated GIF on the top post has been updated- still not much to show yet. The girls look unique now, and the "Zoo"-based level art is coming around, paying a lot of attention to Famicom/NES' palette and tile ram limits. Getting anxious to write some baddies

Yes they are definitely fitting the archetype, without lots of detail
Doodads for the "Zoo"-based level are done- can finally start to write baddies and attacks
Every now and then on 4:3 I check if things aren't fat and squishy, or too fuzzy. In this case so far the graphics do not need adjusting. Game plays great with native NES controller and usb adapter

No idea exactly what kind of gameplay it's gonna be, but it looks pretty nice! Keep it up.

Cool CRT shot. Are you limiting yourself to the NES palette?

Thank you. The gameplay won't stray too far from what already exists on the NES, but hopefully the character-switching makes it interesting and fun. The composer is me. All sound will be created in FT like my other NES-styled game. I am just now writing the first enemy, a greek myth-based horse rooster monster (wiki is calling it Hippalectryon) The goal is to reflect just about all NES/Famicom limitations and common practices of the time

Well! This project finally materialized. Migrated it and everything else from Allegro to Godot, and just worked on this particular game like a mad man Helped me explore and learn Godot+GDScript, its ups and downs. There was a personal adjustment period from a compiled language to interpreted, but got through it and I think I'll stick with Godot for the time being
