Hugs to all the Commonplace book contest winners, which includes every entrant as far as I'm concerned. Also hugs to Santa for keeping on in the face of the ghastly consumer makeover we've given his holiday.

I went to go visit my grandmother today. I haven't seen her for months. She doesn't really remember who anyone is anymore. She can look you in the eye and you'll feel connected to her, but when she tries to say something to you it often comes out garbled.
At the residential facility she lives in, they were having a sing-along. My grandmother would make comments in between songs. It was obvious she was trying very hard to communicate, but she kept saying things like "I came in that way" or "that's a nice window." I tried to respond to her intent rather than her words.
Anyway, hugs to Grandma, and hugs to everybody else who has a relative with dementia.

Hugs to you, sir, and your grandmother. Dementia is a really tough disorder to witness and, undoubtedly, to go through. Music is a good way to help those with Alzheimer's or other dementias feel better, though, as it seems to be a form of memory that is less often disturbed, so at least she has that

Thanks, Nava. My grandmother has always loved singing.
And welcome to the boards, while I'm at it! I'm sure I'll see you around!

Oh, hi Sparky. I only just saw your post... as I read the first part of your post, it seemed like you were describing my grandmother. She was also in a residency, and we went to visit every few weeks. She has passed away now, and we all thought it was for the better.
Sometimes she was better, sometimes she was worse. The first few times, she managed to say our names, even though she associated them with the wrong person. I remember us all (my grandfather, my father and his "friend" at the time, my aunt and cousin) going for a stroll near the see, along some piers. She just locked on to my arm, which had never happened before (we're not too close as a family), and kept walking. By that time she wasn't talking anymore, but she did say a word or two here and there.
At one point, they had to literally restrain her to her chair. She would just get up and walk out. She had a knack for doing that, even before she was interned. My dad would get a phone call at 3 or 4 AM from a police station in the worst part of town saying there was an old lady there and that they had found this phone number sewn in the inside of her cloak. It was there for this purpose.
The most poignant was my grandfather trying to kiss her goodbye, the first time we visited her at her new home. It drew absolutely no reaction, not even a look from her eyes. We just didn't know how to cope with it...
Oh well... Hugs to you, and the best for you and your family.
