^ SURPRISING. Someone needs to take a couple weeks off and PLAY! Personally, I've had quite a kick with SanctuaryRPG, and Eggnogg, a freeware demake of Nidhogg. You can look them both up on http://itch.io .

It might help to let us know what you have played, Derek. 2 by Hubol ( http://www.hubolhubolhubol.com/index.php?id=2) is pretty spiffy. It's a metroidvania that stands out because of glitch-inspired graphics and humorous items whose powers are communicated to you by tweets of the protagonist. Very reminiscent of An Untitled Story. Mibibli's Quest ( http://ryanmelmoth.itch.io/mibiblisquest) is pay-what-you-want (including free) and is essentially NES Megaman with humorous characters. It plays around a bit with conventions with strange levels with themes like "Eggs" and "Crystal Cars". It has one level that combines Megaman platforming with enemies that fire Dance Dance Revolution style commands, forcing you to either dodge or quickly perform the prescribed moves. It's an odd combination of humorous design and standard (but good quality) platforming and level design. Frog Fractions ( http://twinbeard.com/frog-fractions) is more of an experience than a game, and is hard to describe without spoiling it, except to say that you'll eventually be wondering how much further it can go and what will happen next. I'd be surprised if you haven't played this one yet, though.

My absolute favourite would have to be Knytt Stories. Cube 2 is a lot of fun as well if you're into arena shooters.

Mostly a bunch of roguelikes:
Infra Arcana, Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead (tho i don't like the direction that one is taking), Brogue, TOME4 (still technically freeware, right?)

Oh, plus it's technically legal to download MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries now. Originally when it became free MekTek was distributing it but they stopped, so you can look to alternative distributors

Thanks! I've heard of quite a few of these, but not all of them. I changed the subject to the past two years, because it was really in 2013 that I started to lose track of what good freeware games were coming out. Free Indie Games is a great site, but it was hard to tell what was worth playing or not on that site - now they're not even around! Aside from just playing some new things, I kinda want to pick up a little bit of their slack and post some more high-quality freeware titles to the front page and tumblr. I'm definitely quite familiar with anything that has been posted on TIGS: http://www.tigsource.com/category/freeware/Kris Piotrowski posted this on Twitter. Looks pretty cool: http://gamejolt.com/games/other/bernband/34864/

Yeah, Bernband is pretty cool. Definitely captures the feel of the cantina in Star Wars. It's pretty much a walking simulator, but the world building is fantastic. I'd love to see something like it taken just a bit further.
I'm gonna second Mibibli's Quest. It's probably my favorite game that came out in the past year.

this is why everyone should go support timw's patreon; he is basically one of the only people who still focuses on finding good freeware games (there are a few others too of course)
but in any case, my personal favorite freeware game from the past 2 years is echoes+ by binary zoo (it's a free version of their xblig game, and an updated version of their old freeware game echoes)

Totally love Tim.
Ya', that's it. I've only play a bunch of old freeware games recently. There's so much love in the old classics, that's unbelievable that they were freeware.

r0x EP http://rgcddev.itch.io/r0x-extended-play I've tried almost all free finished Windows downloadable non-{Renpy, RPG Maker, Java, Unity, OHRRPGCE, AGS} singleplayer games from FIG and Warpdoor that weren't made for a jam.

I'll second Mibibli's Quest. It's sort of like Space Funeral for Mega Man. Bernband is also great. Tom reminds me of a young Cactus or JW. Definitely has his own perspective and it shows in his work. A bunch of short videos for some of his other games & prototypes on his Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8qLPd2MvVjGM0ciKYa68Fw/videosMason Lindroth is making really cool stuff. Check out Journalière http://www.kongregate.com/games/masonmasonmason/journali-reNuign Specter from Jake Clover, another young guy with a huge creative output, and a particular skill at crafting mood with audio. It'd be nice to see him buckle down and focus on a bigger/more polished work eventually. Check out this supercut of some of his prototypes: Cactus was saying that The Midnight Station is really cool, haven't played it yet but it looks deep & interesting: http://studio-anjin.co.uk/the-midnight-station/Otherwise, a lot of cool stuff has moved to mobile platforms. There's a wealth of cool free (or free with ads) microgames coming out on iOS. Timberman: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/timberman/id871809581?mt=8dEXTRIS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dextris/id844153422?mt=8+ technically shareware but still fully playable in their free editions: Smash Hit: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/smash-hit/id603527166?mt=81-Bit Hero: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/1-bit-hero/id929376037?mt=8There's a whole new phenomenon of freeware/jam games getting picked up for expanded full releases -- both Titan Souls and The Sun and the Moon fit this pattern (I guess a little game called Spelunky was a pioneer, too). Twine games and Adventure/IF stuff are exploding ( Fuck Everything by Fellatia Geisha, for example), but I'm almost totally ignorant of the scene.. And, uh.. Roguelight is neat, Sky Rogue is super-stylish. Lots of nice gems in this year's 7dfps -- Andy Sum's http://gameoftheyear420blazeit.com is the funniest free game I've played in awhile.

I.N.R. Rather simplistic given other games of its type, but hey. Also extremely obscure. And works just fine on Wine, if you're not running Windows. Here's a video (sorry, could not find any on YouTube, use nicoviewer if you don't have a Nico Nico account): http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm20479425This is the site, it includes some other games from that author too (linking directly to the game list because you're bound to completely miss it otherwise, remove knmnsoft.php for the home page): http://kinoei.sakura.ne.jp/knmnsoft.phpSince I always keep forgetting where the site is located I had loaded the game myself as well (it's freeware anyway so who cares): http://sik.titandemo.de/.junk/inr.zipEstimated duration of game: 72 minutes (the game tells you how much you spent when you finish it, heh)
