Friends, lend me your magical artist eyes!

I've been working on a 2 player co-op arcade game for quite some time now.

I keep getting told the style of the main characters (middle of the dirt path), and the style of the background:
A)Don't match cuz one the players are outlined and the background is painterly
B)Distract the eye because the background is stealing all the presence off of the players

I can sorta agree to a point with this but I based it off the difference of character vs background in almost any animated show, and inspiration of SNES games I used to play...so I'm confused. What do you guys think? Am I overstepping the art elements?

While it is true that characters are usually simpler in style due to the need to animate them, I think the difference between character and background is a bit too big in this.

The difference between background and character should in the detail, not the style being used.
At least that's what I think Smiley

Thank you for the insight!

Now I'm wondering how to fix it since those characters are small and not the brightest palette.Blink
