Frog Tale

Hello!
I call myself bitslap and this is my metroidvania in the making.
A pixelated 2 button tale about royalty, drama, jumping, evil backstabbing cobras and the curse of being immortal!

*Update start*
Developing this by myself has taken its toll. I expected to be finished about now. Full time employment as a network engineer has been interfering a lot with the development of this game. Same can be said about the games impact on my engineering job.

I have taken some steps towards improving quality of life, mainly quitting my job to go full time indie. This means that after december i am no longer employed and can have full focus on this project. Needless to say i will still work (and have been) on the side.

I will try and put together some of the latest work into something less scattered, stay tuned.

For clarificition /bitslap
*Update end*

I have been developing this game for almost half a year over a year and I am about finished with the most basic actions and upgrades.
My wish is to bring the old school gems classic feel to the handheld devices of today (touch screens).
My game is void of any onscreen gamepads and require only two thumbs to play. Tap left side for jumping to the left, tap right side for jumping to the right, and build upon this simple mechanic.
I will introduce upgrades in a progressive manner as a reward for exploring and also to unlock earlier inaccesible areas (and treasures!).

Planned release it for Android, iPhone, Windows Phone at first and possibly win/mac/linux later on.

I am the sole developer and you can find my other stuff at http://bitslap.se and my twitter account is https://twitter.com/slapmybitsup

Enjoy some gifs, I hope you find this game as interesting as I have fun working on it.  Cheesy

This game looks great! Really cool control scheme. Good use of frog.

Is the jump distance variable? If so, how is it controlled? By holding the tap?

Hi! Glad you find it interesting  Smiley

Variable jump height by releasing jump (and instantly increasing downforce)

The castle area kind of reminds me of Drakkhen for whatever reason.

I dig how fluid the movement is. Do you already have all the character upgrades planned out? I bet giving the frog some tongue-related abilities would be fun.

If it plays as smooth as it looks like it may, I'm definitely excited. Smart idea, simplifying movement to a basic element, expanding upon it, and making it thematically awesome.

It is not all planned out. Combat will be very limited and I have something in mind for the tongue (that might or might not work). Let's just say I have a lot of room for adding new stuff :D

Thanks, I am quiet happy with the synergy of it all. It is very fun to think around the basic moveset and throw challanges at the player. Also, the game plays as smooth as it looks!

Really nice concept! Specially for mobile devices. Maybe you could find a simple way to introduce skill upgrades like, for example, double jump (double tap).

I will stick a cigar in the mouth of the toad if this is mobile only.

This cannot be mobile only.

It cannot.

Also, that little Frog hopper there is great. Love the concept.

That is not a toad, this is the toad!
From left to right: Croak, Hiss, Ribbit.

This is just a WIP pic btw.

I am developing the controls around the limitations of a touch phone. It works just as fine with a keyboard. The difference is that you will play the game on one hand while resting your face in the other!
