Here is the third preview release. Some tweaks to the previous content along with the third world, including a new secret area and a mid-point cut-scene.

EDIT - Updated to the fourth preview:

Aside from any necessary bug-fixes this will probably be the last playable preview of the game before its done, since the experience of the last few areas would not benefit from being broken up.

Been a while since I updated this thread, although progress on the game has been going as well as ever. Working on the final world now, here is a WIP of its introductory level:

I'm also considering what to do for the games final box/promo art, like whether to make it myself or commision someone else to do it.

Should be a new preview demo soon.

Haha you bypassed an optional puzzle that was intended to be pretty tough by jumping in a way I didn't expect. This is why I need these videos! Thanks.

Finally sat down and played the game after being intrigued by it for a super long time! Played up to the first boss and took a break after failing a handful of times.

I really like the style of game. I felt like a genius when I figured out the puzzle in 1-3. The presentation is really ace, love the smooth animations and the aesthetic is just really interesting and well done.

Also I know horror isn't the focus here but nonetheless I think you have succeeded at making the most uncomfortable setting in a platformer I've seen, wonderful job.

I love these little guys

Thanks guys! Awesome art Moth, that makes me really happy. In some ways it is a horror game, yeah.

I've uploaded a new version of the game with many improvements and the next short area:

https://copy.com/CUd4YhsZmfmONyMY/freedom%20august%20preview%20b.rar?download=1

Anyone who has already played can skip ahead by pressing the number of the world they want to skip to during the intro cut-scene, but please don't skip further ahead to spoil the game.

Shit. Should be working now.

Wait, I just found a big bug in the game so I'm going to fix it and then re-upload it.

Okay, the link has been updated again to version B.

The art style on this is great, though I'm curious as to why you're integrating photos as backgrounds and switching up the pixel resolution. Not that it can't work, it just seems like a bit of a departure from the earlier screenshots.

Good question. The gradual change in art style is there to show how far the protagonist veers off of his original course. He starts as the would-be hero in a generic Mario clone world, so that part uses a simple palette reminiscent of NES or EGA games (though its not actually faithful to either). The farther you get from that familiar setting the less restricted and more jarring the colors and textures become.

Awesome, thanks.

In the mine-laying level what did you mean by checking the "red glowing things"?

I wanted to try running into one of the stationary squares on the map that looked like obstacles, but I didn't quite get around to it before the game ended. I guess they're more orange than red...

Oh, I see. Those are just the respawn points for the enemies.

I'm thinking of making the final box/promo art, and maybe even a manual, using of clay (plasticine and beeswax, to be specific). Here is the first test:

I also made a treasure chest but it was hard to light for the photo.
