Great game idea, I love the art and the rolling brain is  Evil !

I tried and like bithead said, landing punches feels good.
I didn't know what strategy to play, so I tried block and jab, then block, straight and uppercut but I always ended up with no stamina and getting my ass kicked.
Untill I found out no block was working the best for me so I went full straight, kicking the S key like crazy till I won the title fight.

It's hard to balance this kind of game, I guess, because it's up to the player to make a beautifull fight, only few games are doing it properly => street fighter

I'm thinking maybe you could add a key to go head down and generate low punch.
Also a "finish him" last punch would be very satisfying Wink

I had a good time playing the game though, keep up the good work.

@bithead: Thanks for giving it a go man - I've made a few tweaks in the latest version (updated in the first post) - so it's a little easier, let me know if it helps.

No problemo! I played it some more, and here are my thoughts:

It seems easier, in the sense that it takes less hits to knock the guy out, but also, I'm getting better at it so I'm starting to lose my "noob" perspective too Durr...?

A few things that stick out as someone trying to learn how the game works:

  • how quickly opponents throw punches as soon as I drop my guard
  • how quickly, and frequently they react to my punches
  • how difficult it is to get a read on them, so I can block (animations too fast)

At least for the first couple guys. I think the first guy should be a punching bag, like Glass Joe. Slow animations, easy to read. The opponents in BrainBox fight more like Tyson: unexpected, sporadic, fast response.

In any case, I think it's great. It's easy to jump into because of it's deceptive simplicity, but I always end up playing it longer than I set out because I need to master it Smiley

And that's a wrap Smiley

Tried to incorporate as much feedback as I could - still needs a little balancing, but i'm getting the itch to move onto the next thing.

You can play the game HERE

- and HERE'S a short trailer.

Big thanks to everyone who replied with feedback, or just to comment - plus best of luck with your own projects!

- M.

I've never felt more proud than I do right now having demolished my opponent in the title fight! Excellent stuff Smiley I won't pretend I had much of a strategy going on there towards the end, but I never got tired of slugging those chumps in the face!

What are you moving onto next mon ami?

Congrats on finishing! Looking forward to seeing what you do next. I get this error when I attempt to start my first fight unfortunately:

Intentionally or not, I think you've just produced one of the most brutal critiques of these kinds of sports. All it needs is a Papers, Please style economy that illustrates the impact of your brain-damaged state on you and your loved ones over the course of your career.

@ThilDuncan - Glad you enjoyed it Smiley Not too sure what's next, got some ideas floating around, so i'll probably prototype a couple to see what works. It'll be my first commercial project, so expect lots of tits and ass. I hear that sells.

@oldblood - darn it...sorry about that man. Do me a favour and try this version:

- and let me know if that fixes it...

@tortoiseandcrow - that's a lovely compliment! (It was unintentional)

Bleeh.

Apologies all - forgot that I left the mouse input enabled for the menu buttons, but hadn't plugged them in properly to some of the relevant variables, so that's what was causing the crash.

I updated the file linked in the first post - mouse input's been disabled now, so just use the keyboard to navigate the main menu & it should work fine.

(Thanks for flagging that up, you guys Smiley)
