Looks great. Will there be any fighting action indoors? The top down view (Zelda) seems to blend very well with the standard side view (Mario), in my eyes. Smiley

Thanks! Although not really ready to share just yet, you can pretty much smash and fight anywhere, looking forward to showing that at some point.

Recently I have been finding it hard to animate the main character, so I'm kind of backtracking with a series of sketches to try and rediscover him and put him back into pixels. Here's today's warm up.

now I've kind of simplified him down a bit, it's time to make him SD chibi again to line up with the sprite style. Now to get animating, and put new sprites into game.

Drawing characters over and over does wonders for simplification and reduction. If you can simplify a character down into their base shapes you can basically build a brand off it.

He's basically Toad on the face of it, but it more fundamental than that - it's two 16x16 sprites stacked vertically, which was a staple of the NES. Mario becomes one 16x16px when he has no health. 16x32 when he eats a mushroom.

In Pixel Pirate the main character ("Pete" for now) doesn't become half size when he's hit, instead he loses his hat. So visually he will become smaller.

So this is how he's looking based on that new concept art:

SNES > NESDX > NES (no sprite limit)

Just out of interest, do you guys like the left or right version? (generous palette vs limited palette)

This game look gorgeous and it shall be mine and I shall buy it and it will be my game that I play.

I like the characters on the left, more contrast for the things that need most attention on the game screen.

I like the leftmost one as well! The extra details really help the character come alive for me.

The new sprites are great! I do agree with the others though, the contrast is much better on the left side.

I like the generous pallette but I'd like to see that take but with the brown beard.

Yeah, I also like the right ones with less contrast. I think they help to evoke a more dreamy vibe, if that's what you are after. I'd love to see him in context with the enviroment but that may be asking too much hahaha

Yes I think you might be right, it would be better to see him in context to make a decision.

I personally don't think the new style feels NES-like at all, but maybe that's just me.  After all, there's more to the NES style than just the palette.  The shading looks "too" complex and unfitting, and so on.

Colored as it is now, I think the enviroment contrasts better with the more complex shaded sprites. I mean, they really stand out from the background. I think that if you'd go for the less contrast feel, you should also wash out the colors of the enviroment. I understand this might be a little too much of an unecessary work, so maybe you should stay with the sharper colored sprites. I still prefer the less contrast ones though hahahaha Giggle

What happened to the old palette?

Does the limited palette version still look good in combination with the dark environments?
