I lost interest in the Metal Gear series when Metal Gear Solid 4 came out, the gameplay was fun but I just couldn't handle the long ass cut scenes. I can tolerate lengthy cut scenes better in a less action-oriented game, like a JRPG (though Xenosaga tested those limits), but the ones in MGS4 made me quit playing a quarter of the way through. I might have just kept going if I could skip the shit but there was no option for it.

i don't even know what the consensus is tbh im just assuming people probably hate it because its "different" from the rest of the series.

i believe the consensus is that mgs5 is a great game mechanically and a disaster on or near the level of mgs4 on a storytelling level

it doesnt have much storytelling in the first place tho, so that part is easy enough to ignore. anyway the game is very very good and i enjoyed it quite a bit, tho i wouldnt replay it but thats not saying much because i almost never replay games

mgs5 is probably the only game that is hated for not having enough long cutscenes

same.

mgs4 was good, but it's def the weakest kojima-directed mgs game.

i liked mgsv's story far more than mgs4's too, even knowing that it's incomplete and even so the plothole that chapter 3 would resolve isn't bothersome to me anyway.

it's worth noting that most fan like the story of mgs4 and the same despise mgs5 for it's lack of story. MGS4 outsold all others and is on many list  of or winning GOTY (he won neogaf's).

mgs5 story actually has some interesting elements. i mean how many AAA action games have cultural imperialism via language as one of their central themes?

it also has an awkwardly quasi silent protagonist because the guy who made it wanted his dvd copy of the lost boys signed

snake looking bored and saying nothing is better than snake repeating the last word of every sentence an npc just said like a clint eastwood voiced parrot tbh.

the scene where skullface delivers his Grand Speech laying out his Evil Plans accompanied by Epic Orchestral Music and snake just stares blankly is the high point of the game

he spent 9 years practicing his big speech and gave it to the wrong guy, who didn't care. it's brilliant but not in the way it was intended. kojima needs a fucking editor which is partly what happened with the mgs1 localisation but then he started demanding literal translations of his work which resulted in In world war 2 she was the one who led us to victory in that war

i can't think of a single reason this game that draws inspiration from red dead redemption would have a silly zombie dlcother than corporate malfeasance directed at a genius auteur

Pachinko is such a mystery.

There's like a dozen parlors in every suburb.

They're fuck-off massive buildings with 100s of machines in them, but there is at most 20 people in there in peak hour.

The people who play them are by majority old men who watch NHK, don't own smart phones, and hate their families. Their entire human interaction outside of road-side oden sellers consists of making that twisty-hand pachinko symbol at other workmates in the elevator in the morning and then pantomiming disappointment with the outcome of last night's session.

Even if people were dropping their entire paycheck into it, it can't possibly come close to recouping the insane property rental cost of having a building the size of 3 apple stores open all day in the middle of the city, so I can only presume that they're just yakuza fronts like everything else that exists despite clearly operating at a loss.

Which all makes perfect sense until you start to wonder where the fuck the target audience for high-quality metal gear solid cutscene remasters factors into all of this.

All I see out the front of these buildings is anime and gaming advertising, and all I see inside is old men with no interest in the above.

Maybe I'm just hanging with the wrong crowd...
