I'm aware of this one--the search index needed to be rebuilt since the change (which is still happening, it's a long process).

Will look into the preview, not sure what's up there.

And yeah, hopefully the only broken characters in the old data were since the server move (i.e. super old posts should convert just fine).  I guess the data was getting mangled on the way into the database for whatever reason since the move...

Search should be back online!  Reply here if anything seems weird.

The page reloading quirk ThemsAllTook mentioned seems to still be happening (I'm using Firefox in OSX Yosemite), but search seems to be working on my side so far.
rotated? like standing on their corner? not at all it's the same square than above!
I see, it does not work properly then. (the image Sinclair linked is what it should appear, it is a star but I thought it could look like a rotated square in some displays because of the character's size)

Previews should be fixed (turned out to be a bug introduced in the latest security fix).

As for UTF-8 characters, the site is just storing/echoing whatever data goes into text fields.  If you're seeing squares/missing font stuff it's on your end; your OS/browser/whatever doesn't have the font to display it.  Upgrade!  It's entirely possible to input character data that's super weird and localized and not included on most non-localized systems.

There are lots of characters mapped in UTF-8, with something like 100,000 in the Unicode spec.  You can use a tool like this to draw and find the best match for arbitrary input: http://shapecatcher.com/

Yes I guessed it is on my end, but I don't know how to upgrade, I haven't found anything relevant so far and the option in the font panels didn't change anything. :/
