When pixel art and polygons make love, a trixel is born. Then Fish steals the trixel and does HORRIBLE things to it.

I was looking at adam's site earlier, I was pretty sure he had some kickass low poly stuff on there (the main thing I remember being a walking tank mech thing) but I couldn't find it now. I might have been thinking of someone else Huh?

I have to say I like the regular look of TF2 better, but most of this stuff is pretty darn cool.

I've always wondered why so few people attempt a low-res look in 3D games, since it seems easier, and can turn out quite nice.

oh how I loved megaman legends... it had a great style back then, it made the use of limited polygons and small textures look so neat. it had kind of a pseudo-cell shaded look.

I hope they make a sequel to the Misadventures of Tronebonne one day...

Yes! this is some pretty sweet stuff.

There's some excellent stuff like this over at Pixelation, by the way:
http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?board=17.0
Lots of nice things there too.

I think it's best when there's no lighting done by the rendering engine, and the shadows and highlights are just drawn on the surfaces.

Threads of Fate was an excellent RPG in the graphical style you've posted. It came out fairly early for the Playstation.

Mmm hmm!

Edit: may as well post something of mine though I posted it in another thread ages ago.

now you did it! now i gotta make some low-res/lowpoly stuff.  Gotta say I love this style, I remember how great megaman legends was.  I thought 8-bit killer was a great indie game that made great use of these kind of graphics.

I love good pixel art, but I grew up with stuff like Legends' lowpoly art, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Also, a tad off topic, but...
There also tends to be more z-axis to older 3d games (enemies on balconies, bridges over arenas, pits, etc.
This is something that really bothers me about modern games. They don't utilize the 3rd dimension very well, if at all. Why do they even bother letting you look up?

I think Quake stands out as one of my favorite games graphically (also gameplay-wise, but that's irrelevant) not just because of the really cool gritty lowpoly models, but also the levels. They really took full advantage of the third dimension, and it added a lot to the foreboding atmosphere when you see some of the more towering pieces of architecture in the game. (Ziggurat Vertigo, anyone?)

I'd say we've reached the point where the "retro" aesthetic no longer automatically means "2D sprites". After all, the 3DO came out more than a decade and a half ago. Polygons can be old-school, too!
