The texture has character. The model doesn't.

IMO the design and look overall look super, but quake's textures are so blurry and badly-made that it annoys me.

Someone needs to make quake source. High res models, but the same levels and everything.

The more I look at the Quake models, the angrier I get.
What the fuck is with the modelling? It looks like someone made a high-poly model and then just pulled most of the polygons out with a really bad algorithm. No human hand could make such poor choices on where to place obvious seams.
And in terms of general forms, just look at the ogre-thing! His left arm is like shoulder, bicep and then it just skips the rest of the arm and jumps right to the wrist. Meanwhile his right arm has no bicep and is like 90% skinny forearm. What the hell were they thinking?
I need to stop reading this thread.

I've never really researched Quake1, but if I remember correctly, they weren't using modern methods of animation, either. If I recall, they were doing the vertex animation by hand. and the computer was smoothing between the keyframes. So they were actually moving the geometry, not rotating bones. The various distortions in the model during animation is most likely the result of them trying to add exaggeration to the model, and that would have resulted in some texture warping as well.
Sorry I've not made the tut yet. I've been sick like a dog for the last few days now. The people I work with have apparently made swapping stomach viruses a new favorite past-time.

Am I the only one that would like to make a game that looked like Parappa the Rapper?

No! Parappa is a great looking game. Colour, colour, and more colour.

Yeah, I did not know what the heck until I watched some vids. Now, it is a super source of inspiration for me, and I love it a whole lot.

I've wanted to play rakugaki showtime for so long. Too bad I'd have to shell out 200 bucks to do it

Anything by Treasure tends to be amazing, though sometimes it feels a bit too experimental (Stretch Panic, for example)- and they will more often than not use 2D graphics on a 3D world (though then they'll sometimes resort to 2.5D, like Mischief Makers, though that had I believe one boss that was genuinely 3D with a pixel sprite as a texture...)
On that note, I will mention
.

Since I came after the age of pixel art, low-poly, low-colour 3d is full of nostalgia. The muddy 256-colour computer game and gritty N64 textures bring back memories.
On the other hand, trying to forget nostalgia, I am of the mind that low-poly 3d looks terrible unless they use simpler shapes and bright colours. The look of DS 3d is much more appealing to me than older 3d games now.

Yeah, same. Has anyone tried the Avalon Code demo? It looks beautiful! I actually came in during the Gamecube, though...
