Heya! A site that I'm affiliated with is running a contest-like-event (jam) next weekend, and I thought some people here might be interested in it! The theme is simple - in 48 hours, create an RPG. Your design should be informed by the jam's theme : "LoFi". Other than that, there are absolutely no restrictions on how you approach things! Even the deadline is flexible - if you want to start a little earlier you can, or later if you're busy on that friday and want to make a weekend out of it you can do that too - and thanks to the way things are over at RPGDX you can pretty much do as much preparation as you want on your engine and assets (the point being that all you should really be making during the jam's 48 hours is actual game content). Trying to create an RPG in a mere 48 hours is one of the most breathtaking, life affirming actions you can attempt! That is a slight exaggeration! Still! Nothing quite shakes you out of your comfort zone so effectively as this - no genre is as ripe for experimentation and reinvention as the RPG. Really hope to see some of you take part in this! I'm also very tempted! I might actually be dropping a course as my current workload is killing me, so that would free up time for things like this.

I wouldn't mind teaming up with someone and doing pixel art and some writing for a quirky RPG loosely inspired by the MOTHER series, if someone else can code and put it together

Excellent! I can't wait till next weekend! terry bear,

(1) Sure, any kind of genre splicing or reinvention is fine! (2) You don't have to do anything you don't want to do.

I'm thinking I'd like to take a page from the one-room platformer and do a one-room RPG. Maybe I'll split it up into three 'chapters' a la Live A Live or something (time permitting), but for each one have the whole thing take place on one screen, so each chapter is a micro-JRPG from beginning to end boss in the space of one area, with dialogue distilled down to the pure essence of vintage RPG speech.
I think it could be amusing.

Heh, I've been vaguely thinking along the same lines. HERO'S mighty quest to destroy VILLAIN and rescue LOVE INTEREST or something like that :D

I'm sure there's room for plenty. Christ, it'd be good to see you get a game out, but, you know, be careful about putting mere recreations ahead of your academic studies/&c..
Condensed RPG sounds like it would work really well. (and there's plenty of room for several variations on the considerably broad theme).
(there was a one-screen rpg competition over at adva.com.ar a while ago, I think).

Wow, that sounds quite awesome! I'm pretty busy that weekend, but maybe I'll just make something early (and take some days off work!) I just happen to be working on a Lo-fi RPG engine too...

I'm totally going to participate in this, it has a really interesting concept. I need to get on making a generic engine for mine...

If I've got the time, it would be cool to participate.
Hopefully I can manage something creative-yet-feasible, with some randomly-generated content.

Hey, it's my birthday too! Cheers! Although in my case it means I probably can't really participate... I'll try and post some kind of build of my Lo-fi RPG anyway, and poke my head in the forums, just to make a token effort.
