Torque is great, although I dislike the editor. Frozen Synapse uses Torque (probably 3D) to great effect - a great game with excellently-pulled-off graphics.

I believe that GameMaker Studio will become a professional tool for professionals in game industry. Say goodbye to interpreter.! Yes! and other beliefs in this world include: - fluffy cloudy heaven with angels and harps and dead missed relatives - quite a few virgins when you suicide-bomb yourself - grey aliens - a new world order that knows how to secretly govern the total of the planet - a fat man riding a carriage with reindeers in the sky - some bunny who hides eggs. - and your belief in GameMaker Studio. Please, as a prototype tool it might be great, to make the real version of a game it probably is not. bye!

I didn't read every page of this thread so I don't know is this was suggested before. But you could add LÖVE. It is written in Lua and pretty nice to work with and high level. https://love2d.org/

Duality (Duality is a flexible 2D game framework written entirely in C# – and it’s here to make things a little easier for you. It provides both an extensible game engine and a visual editor to match. There will be no need for a level editor, testing environment or content manager because Duality is all that by itself. And best of all: It’s free.) http://www.fetzenet.de/blog/?page_id=697Videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/Fetzenet?feature=watch

But I liked it, it's quite a lot like Unity but completely focused 2D and more extendable.

Going to try a game in Clojurescript. Very nice language, but not sure about stability or performance yet (hopefully good enough for turn-based2d at least).

A year ago I wrote this programming language called Despair (I know the name sucks ). I wrote it as a programming challenge and the language is meant to be easy for game developers to use. It doesn't have good performance and has some bugs (don't have much time to fix it right now) but it is quite useable to create small games. I created a breakout clone using it. If you want to check it out here is the link: http://www.pradsprojects.com/despair.htmlThat link contains the Virtual Machine, Compiler and IDE as well as a link to the breakout game and language documentation.

I know it's not really popular these days, but I prefer doing stuff in C++. It's what I'm most versed in, and it gets the job done.
As for frameworks, cocos2d is really nice if you're making a game for iPhone or iPad. It's written in Objective-C, but you can still write your game in C++ and use it, although the beauty of your code will be questionable to say the least. There's also cocos2d-x, which is a port of cocos2d project to C++, so you can use that, too. It's especially useful if you need to run your game on different platforms (i.e. iOS, Android, web browser, etc.).

It's good to know there are programs for making games other than just programming in <your language here>, especially for newbies, who have little or no programming experience. Thanks for posting dude.
