Question: Could anyone recommend a supersimple (preferably free) 3d modeling software? What I want to be able to do is create a lowpoly character, simply for reference purposes when I do pixel art from various perspectives. Example:

Blender is free ( though not that simple ). http://www.blender.org/The UI is hard to understand initially ut if you run through the UI tutorials it becomes easier to grasp the ideas behind the UI and thus it becomes easier to use, then some of the other tutorials will take you through model creation and scene manipulation. To be honest, I tried Blender a while back and was getting the hang of it but havent actually used it for a long time ( learning C++ and SDL and GraphicsGale ( for pixel art ) is already a handfull )).

Simple and powerful. Use this if your main concern is modeling.

so I gave blender another try and 2.5 is WAY easier to get a hang of. I looked up a couple of tuts and tried to do some stuff on my own and made a desert I guess... though I cheated with the moon... that I did in photoshop on the render. how do you add a moon in blender??

Swordofkinds, that lighting looks amazing! As for a moon, in Maya, the way I'd have done it would be to have a projected image plane for the camera that is your backdrop sky with a moon. I wouldn't know what to call it in Blender, as I could never figure that program out. Here's the render from my final for Intro to 3D: He wanted us to make a bug interacting with an environment.

thanks guys! :D markham, that's probably a good way to do it, but It's a bit too advanced for me now! I barely know what I'm doing. btw, that scene with the bugs look awesome! I love the depth of feild on that! the bug models are also really nice. I WISH it was as easy texturing a sphere and putting it in the sky, thedaemon. I try to put it super high in the "sky", but when it's too far away from the camera it won't render it... theres probably something super easy to get around that but I have no idea what. anyways, I did an animations :O *rendered at 640x480* Edit! I just did a little render of an alien character I made for my first actual animation I want to do; it'd be a short(30 sec I guess) animation about an alien on a toilet, playing a trumpet or something. It would show a space craft in the first shot, the alien doing something, then going to the bathroom. Then, the alien pulls out a trumpet, plays it while he's taking a crap or something. Of course, you wouldn't see any crap, but there will be alien farts. it looks pretty horrible, but this only version 1! Though once again I cheated with photoshop because I added in some shoddy eyes...

Render it separately and set it as background image in your render panel.

This is my first model and texturing attempt. I attempted to rig it too, but I think I did a pretty screwy job of that.
