Sorry to nitpick, but our hero seems to hover a bit while walking.
True, or am I seeing too much?

I think you may be right.  I'll have to adjust the hitbox.

Shadows should be blocky as well. Cuts the early 3D aesthetic as is.
I think a blob shadow would be the appropriate. as an added bonus those help a lot with 3D perception in a way that sideways projected shadows don't

not a big fan of that font and color; it blends into the environment and the font isn't angular or pixelated or bold enough for the game's main aesthetic.

two suggestions from me 2 u:

1) use a bolded font and add a different-colored border to help make it "pop" out at the player.
2) look for a more angular pixely font to better match the aesthetic. here's a bunch of free fonts; i like operational amplifier http://www.1001fonts.com/pixel-fonts.html

Yeah, the font is a temporary placeholder.  The pixel fonts I normally use didn't really fit and I haven't spent the time yet to pick out a proper replacement.  Operational Amplifier does look good, I'll try that out.  Thanks!

I thought that as well, but blocky shadows just seem a bit better.

It did alright.  Not very well by Steam standards, but very well by games-I've-sold-elsewhere standards.

Awesome. I like how you are doing a 3D sequel to a 2D game. Reminds me of Duke Nukem.
