Shade is a free game who's code is available under the MIT license. It's a casual affair wherein you try to collect as many mushrooms as you can before nightfall. However, if you walk in the sun you'll get burned so you have to stick to the shadows as much as possible. There are ten levels in all and global high score lists for each level as well as game-wide. Finally, it's available on all platforms in both a native format and as a Java webstart.

It's the authors first game released to the public. We entered one of Lost Garden's prototype challenges and managed to win a silver medal. You can read more about the game at the official webpage or watch the

.

Thanks to everyone here at TIG Source who provided feedback. Your input helped make the game much better!

Finally, here are the download links:

  * Windows (big download no Java required): Download Shade
  * OS X: Download Shade
  * All Platforms (small download requires Java, not native look & feel): Download Shade

Pretty fun, and I still couldn't beat level 7 for some reason.
Great game nonetheless.

I love simple, innovative games and this one looks good. It appears to run fine but it crashes after about a minute in. I'm running JRE 1.6.0_12, on Windows XP.

I have the java console open and some log messages are shown. Anyone know how to stop the java console from closing when the game crashes so I can get at the exception / error?

Hey Hex, thanks for the interest! I'm not sure about this crash, that's news to me! I'll have to take a closer look on my machine tonight. Unfortunately I only have Vista to test on. Anyway, all of that said if you don't mind the larger download size you can download the native windows version which doesn't require the JRE and thus should work.
