You've seen it in many games, which most of are mega crappy, but what's you opinion on it? I'm not talking about the really good looking stuff some awesome folks do, and I'm not talking about uber-crappy graphics either. Just average, sloppy lines, little to no shading, careless colors. Obviously it is (usually) a style that comes from lack of skill, but can it be forgiven? At what point does it become so crappy that it's awesome?
Examples: my compo entries, jazzuo's games, can't think of any more right now.

It seemed to work just fine in An Untitled Story.

i think it sucks, flat colors are ok, but what the hell, at least a bit of antialiasing

YMM actually made that with Paint.NET, but yeah the style is basically described as above. I'm his art bitch now, so there'll be no more of that. Sure, "ms paint" is a valid style... it's just not a very nice looking one, if you ask me.

I don't see what makes an art style "valid" or not.

I don't see what makes MSPaint an art style at all. More of a tool. I'm sure you can make "MSPaint"-like graphics with other software. That small nitpicking aside: Maybe.

It's sorta similar to what decides whether a video game is "art" or not...

If a medium can be used to create art, it is valid. Some have made valid art with trash.
Although, it isn't an art style.

Define MS Paint, because I do all of my pixel art in MS Paint.

I have no idea what strabism is. No, it was just some random doodle I did while stuck in a place without Photoshop.

Sure - why not? If it does what the developer wants it to do, there isn't really a problem. Better than never releasing a game because you don't have any art skill.

Oh. Well yeah. I wasn't really working off of a reference or caring if it made sense/didn't look silly. I spent most of my time messing with the skull on the cheek and whatnot. Not that it matters. It doesn't look particularly bad or JPEG artifacty despite being made in Paint. I don't recall how I converted it to a PNG though, being away from my software of choice for doing such a thing, though...

Well, MS Paint can save images as PNG, so that might be it.

yes. I do all of my pixel art in either MSPaint or MMF2's own editor.

This is like asking if Faber-Castell is a good art style.
It's not the tool, it's the man who uses it. If the artist is bad, he will be bad regardless of the tool; whether it's pen and paper, or Photoshop or MS Paint. If all he can is doing solids with bad lines and terrible choice of colors, he will do so with any software. Check YouTube, people make amazing things with MS Paint. With many different styles.

That was my first thought, too, when I read the topic. i think with MS Paint style nayon means "a thing that you COULD do with paint in a matter of minutes" like it basically lacks of any antialias and has high contrasted colors for dark\lit tones, because they're the ones you can pick up faster in paint. MS Paint style can be done in any software, it only needs to look like something that could be done with paint in a matter of minutes, so the complete lack of antialias and lack of polish....
