Hi all

A friend of mine is making a cool game and I volunteered to do the art for him, since it's a simple project, with only one background and an animated character. I have a sketch of the background and character and could use some feedback on both.

To the left is the first iteration, (there are some lost pixels flying around, don't mind them) natural colors and all, but when I put the background on it looks completely wrong. So the second iteration (to the right) is my attempt to match the lighting.

with background

Is it me or the whole thing is way too dark? I can't tell anymore.

Here's a more finished version. (mockup)

I wouldn't say the whole thing is too dark. But the character his background may be a bit too similar in darkness for some, but I like it.

The first one pops out more, and is somewhat more readable.

I do see what you mean with the lighting.
The first one looks like there is a fire illuminating him from the top left.
The second has the lighting from below which is where I'd say is coming from (lava beneath).

Nice atmosphere you got going on there. Hand Thumbs Up Right

I would like to see more contrast in the coloring of the character. I like the new reds but feel you should broaden the shades on the character. His skin tone should be much brighter. I don't like the midtone of the robe, I feel it should be darker as well.

I personally tend to prefer the first version as it pops out more from the background.
Most of the time it's important to differentiate the character from the background.
You could do this by choosing opposite colors or dark vs light.
That said, it's a very nice piece of pixel art Smiley

Thanks for the feedback, everyone Smiley More contrast could work but simply messing with the contrast slider doesn't give me good results so I'll have to do it by hand.

I think a little more saturation of your colors may give you a good result as well.

Hopefully you are using a program that allows you to adjust the individual index colors... That way you can just adjust the red and blacks in the wizard sprite. Perhaps saturated for darks/lights and desaturated for midtones? I'm at work so can't show an edit. Hopefully I will remember when I'm home.
