how can something feel both overproduced and low-quality is my question
it's music-slang, sorry. It means cookie-clutter placement of sound effects/music for dramatic purpose with no regards to tone or overall value it would add to something. I don't think I've ever heard it used positively. I don't mind the slightly amateurish video editing style though. I think it has charm.

The irish one yeah, not the other, the irish one was actually interesting, the other is a playthrough of the earthbound hack that might have primed undertale (one song originate there) and the later is a theory of mat pat which is interesting more about the connection with earthbound rather than the conclusion

Just finished the game today. Way late on that. Interesting to hear all your feedback on the game, especially @Frankiesmiles breakdown of the three routes in terms of player perspective.
I agree that the intent of the game, with its moral and stuff, is A+++ but the execution was a little on the weaker side. Kind of reminds me of Hotline Miami's secret ending where they basically said "you didn't have to kill all those people if you didn't play this game."
There's also a looooot of deliberate references to other games that I haven't decided if I like or dislike. A good one that comes to mind is the CORE theme, which is similar to Undersea Palace from Chrono Trigger in sound and function -- the battles in both the CORE and Undersea Palace do not interrupt the music which keeps the emotional state tense. In any case, most of the refs were tastefully executed even if a bit overt. Except Tsunderplane is pretty dumb. Swing and a miss on that one, can't win em all Toby.
I really like Sans's character, his nihilism a result of knowing that the game will inevitably get reset. Makes me wonder... how much of this was intentional on Toby's part vs. what played out really well? Like, how do you even begin to develop such a story? Makes me want to make a game of my own.
I'm curious to see how this influences upcoming games, and specifically JRPG's because it basically called them out for all the dated and meaningless mechanics that rid them.
Ultimately, I think Undertale manages to be a very very very smart and new recipe using familiar ingredients. I haven't played Stanley Parable... is it worth a playthrough? Haven't heard much about it
Oh, and all the open-closing of the game and save state manipulation is really interesting. Anyone know of other examples where games use the medium like that? Top of mind, I remember a puzzle in Zelda Phantom Hourglass for the 3DS where a puzzle required you to literally close the 3DS to "stamp" something from the top screen onto the bottom screen. Loved that moment but came out of freaking no where in a zelda game.

Yes, the particular thing that you mention about Zelda was a very clever utilization of the medium, and I think more games should strive to utilize the limits and boundaries of games as mechanics, I think it might add quite a bit of charm to certain games that use them well. Undertale is certainly a shining example of this.

I absolutely agree. It's a pretty core piece of Undertale's story though, so I wonder how it can be executed in other games without feeling like it's just an Undertale rip-off?
