It perplexes me that in a world with millions of self described nerds/geeks/science lovers, the First World in general is populated by those who claim to love Technology but don't understand or give a single shit about machining technology that's been around for close to a century now. People who are totally thrilled by the idea of being able to DIY their own stuff because of 3d printers or whatever have never looked at what manufacturing processes have been around for decades- ones that are mature formed of technology that are readily available.
Machining is a valuable, beautiful thing, and it's tech, science, cool stuff and should be respected:

Modern first generation home 3D printing evolved from milling tech (coverage algorithm, head control), I don't know what you are talking about in fact progress in home 3D printer revive home milling too, and it's spilling into affordable pick up and place machine that is starting to be experimented on. It's not like DIY didn't exist before, but 3D printer is more flexible, accessible and less wasteful. But "voxel" 3d printer with color and material control is appearing so

I agree, since your rebuttal has nothing to do with what I said. but 3D printer is more flexible, accessible and less wasteful.
Curious as to what you mean by this?

You said they never look at milling That's wrong, home milling and 3d printing are basically the same sub nerd community by now

Cool to see Boston Dynamics is making stuff that might eventually be useful for the average person.
