Yes, physic is sooo cool to use.

When all of this will be done, I'll have to make a breakdown of my game, detail where & why I used physics, scripts and stuff like that. A kind of tutorial, might interest people here, right ?

I wanna make a deluxe version too, with shaders & shadows, too.   Tiger

It's nicely comming along, but there are still loads of features to implement :

  • The end of level
  • A compass
  • The island
  • A level #2
  • Give the enemies the ability to shoot at the player

The 'end of level' comes first in the priority list, I guess.

In the meantime, here's a video capture of the game. Enjoy !

I was wondering about a Japanese version of my game, so I asked a friend to do a quick translation of the few texts I had in the game.

I tossed the JP text file and a nice Unicode font in the engine, and it worked.
The result is quite sexy, imho.

Tomorrow I'll make a proper menu to select the language  Durr...?

Quite stunning. I found it enjoyable, and kind of relaxing actually. Smiley I noticed some sort of glitch sounds here and there later on in the game; not really bad though. I can see why you have the congratulating message appear before you actually bump into the island, because, you CAN'T bump into the island! Really freaked me out when I kept on sailing toward it and suddenly, WOOSH, it swung around behind me. LOL

Nice entry man. Beer! Oh, and that Japanese version is looking smooth.

That is certainly a gorgeous game. I just wish there are some challenge, but alas, it was very enjoyable. Smiley

Also, you should model the island itself, and have the finalle being hitting the shore and looking over the island and all its mysteries.

Thanks Melly. That one of my problems, making graphics instead of gameplay.
I'm striving to improve that Smiley
My next game should be a GAME before being a visual demonstration. I promise !

KniteBlargh, looks like you found THE bug, hehe. Actually, I purposedly allowed the player to pursuie the journey until the island slides abruptly out of the screen.

The whole island is a visual trick, now you know it Smiley

In the meantime, I uploaded a RC2.
Nothing new in the game, except that now you can play either in French, English or Japanese.

TO PLAY THE GAME, read below

  • Download & unzip
  • install OpenAL
  • install VC Redist 2008
  • Click on Start.bat

I included all you need in the archive.

Right click here to download the game.

Choose your language with the left & right keys, select with [CTRL] or [SPACE].
Press spacebar on the title screen to launch the game.
In game controls : <- and -> to control the aim, CTRL to shoot boulders.
Destroy the ships on your route, bit hitting them with the boulders.
If you don't destroy any of them, they will hold you back and you will never reach the island.
Use the compass to find the direction of the Island.

That's all !

RC2 Changes : Implementation of Japanese, English and French version.

I need to thank :
Emmanuel Julien / www.Nengine.fr / for providing the engine and tech. support.
Benoît Charcosset / maf464.free.fr / who composed the tunes I used.
Masami Tanzi / www.tanzi.jp / for the Japanese Translation.

Well, I've told you already on IM what I think about your graphics, so I'm not going to gush about them here. I'm just going to say that they are fucking gorgeous. This game is fucking gorgeous and you are a very talented person.

Regarding the gameplay... I know that this kind of changes the actual mechanics a little, so I apologize in advance about this suggestion, but maybe you can make holding down the attack button change the distance of the projectile and make them go in an arc, instead of just changing the power and having them always go straight. In fact I thought initially that that was what it was supposed to do and  was a little bit disappointed when I found out it wasn't.

Anyway, the game is absolutely gorgeous and if you add some challenge to it, it can be a real gem.

Just got the chance to play it on a nicer computer. It is very beautiful, and I very much liked how it is never possible to reach the island. It made me feel like I was on the Flying Dutchman, condemned to never actually reach land, even when it seemed so close. You've done a very good job on this. The only problem I can see is that there is no real visual response from the ship on movement. The ship itself feels static and unmoving, even though it clearly is.

Well, u've never been so close from the truth. The ship is clearly, technically, and even visually STATIC.

I wanted to add some waves, when it goes forward, but couldn't find the time yet Smiley

Internally speaking, I store its position, so that I can compare it with the position of the Island. But, well, because of the trick used on the waves, I couldn't think of a good technique to make the ship move.

Your suggestion is a good one, in addition with some clouds in the sky, maybe.

Maybe the waves are too strong and too high ?

There's no problem with the waves, but if the ship itself was more animated, it would look much better (eg. rocking from side to side, etc.)

Really nice game!

The graphics work really well for this game; the ambient occlusion was a very nice touch.

It works on my old computer, even  :D

Requires VC redistributable?

No chance of this cool piece of art will appear on the Mac then?

Fuzz :
Having the boat banking from side to side could be easily done.
I'll make a Todo list and implementent the most important features !
I need motivation, counting on you to harass me on this Smiley

I might put the source code online, if someone is interested.

GenericUser :
Thanks for the feedback. What is your PC, btw ? CPU/GRAPHICS/OS ?

Eobet :
Well, using the redist doesn't mean the game in stuck with Windows actually.
Especially, the engine i'm using doesn't use anything related to MS. 3D is OpenGL, audio is OpenAL, fonts are FreeType, and so on.
Currently, the engine compiles on Win, Linux and even Wii.
So there is no reason why it should be a problem with OS X, it just need to be done.

Thx for asking Smiley

Nice game, pretty graphics and all. I only wished that I could whip my slaves or sailors for faster reloads. And some points or kill count when reaching the island would've been nice.
