What is the hardest part of game development for you, and how do you try to over come that difficulty?

For me right now, although I've been an artist a lot of my life, I am better at programming. I'm finding art for games a real struggle right now. I don't have the time to invest in it and to make it as good as I want. I'm trying put more time into it, and I'm trying to lower my expectations of my own art, but these things are proving difficult to do.

Also, hello everyone! I've finally joined TIG after lurking for many months.

Accepting that you can't do everything exactly the way you want to or wish you could.

You always have this "perfect game" in your head and when the reality sinks in that you can't actually produce that perfect game it can sink your enthusiasm quickly and brutally. You're going to want a general idea of where you are heading but being flexible and letting things unfurl and develop as you go will sometimes save you a lot of misery. Rather than seeking to make the perfect game that is in your head you have to explore the actual game unraveling before you.

Grind. I.e. doing everything that's left after cool stuff.

Also realizing the cool stuff isn't as cool as you thought and losing faith in your own idea.

When you are bad at programming - Code > Compile > Error > Repeat > Code > Compile > Error >  Cry > Repeat...

The hardest part for me is keeping the same enthusiasm for the game during development. I have always been a perfectionist, but I also have a short attention span, and regardless how much I love a game idea, I will eventually slow down and then stop on a games development with not much done.

Its something I am working on myself to stop this happening more and more, but its hard to change something you have always known.

Finishing a long project. That and finding time to work on it around an existing job/social life.

Sweet baby Jesus the grind is the worst part by a couple factors of ten.
Many of my ideas are trashed for nothing less than how much grinding work it would take.

The hardest part of game development is making everything work right.  I hate when there are so many bugs and I can't figure out to fix them.  Another part is coming up with a name for the game.  Wink
