Don't drive into San Francisco. For the love of all things sacred, keep your vehicle away from that place.  Make someone else do it.

Oh, and bring Business Cards. Lotz, and make it cool. If it's not cool, you'll be eaten. :D

I'm staying with family and taking a train into the city every day, it's a lot cheaper than a hotel. And I got 190 cards printed up, so I'm good then.

Never sleep. Never ever sleep.

Also don't feed the homeless people. They only want your brains!

Milling About

- Talk to the guy next to you in the lunch line.  Be friendlier than usual, even if you're normally outgoing.

- Write down reminders on business cards when you get them ("met in lunch line Tues").  You're going to forget people.

- Drink twice as much water as you think you need.  4x if you're drinking at parties.

- Save getting drunk drunk for Friday or Saturday after the show.

- If a session sucks in the first five minutes, for god's sake get up and leave.

- If a session absolutely rocks text your friend.  Maybe their session sucks.

- It's not really about the sessions.

- Find sessions that attract interesting people.  Mingle with them after.  Suggest lunch together if a discussion starts up after an 11am session.

- Speak up in roundtables, but be concise.

- If you care about t-shirts/etc hit up the expo right before show closing; they don't want to haul their shit home.

- Everybody is approachable.  Only 1 in 1,000 people are genuinely aloof or inaccessible (and there aren't 1,000 speakers)!

- Be nice to the CAs (colored-shirt volunteers).  Many of them are indies or even mainstream pros whose companies wouldn't shell out the cash for a pass.

- Write down your thoughts during the week.  You'll have a lot of inspired ones!

- Keep your game readily demoable on your laptop (or a thumb drive, or a video on your iPhone, or whatever), in case it comes up in conversation.  Don't be overbearing on demos--politely show your game but don't kill a table of conversation with a forced 30-minute walkthrough.

- Rehearse your presentation!  If you want last-minute feedback hang out in a speaker lounge and ask anyone there to listen to a part of it (intro, or whole thing if it's super short).

Only if you have Phil's endurance for hang overs. I can't do it, but Phil can. And I'm so jealous of him and his ability to drink all night and get up early in the morning.

Also don't go and get wasted on the last night if your plane is leaving early in the morning. Or do go and get wasted on the last night if you want to participate the "I missed my plane" party.

last year i missed my flight for exactly those reasons, and my carrier couldnt get me back to montreal for another FIVE DAYS. so i spent an extra unplanned week in San Francisco and it was fantastic! only cost me 65 bucks to re-schedule.

My flight leaves 8:45am on the saturday after.  NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.  I might have to just stay up the entire friday night and hold off sleep until I'm on the plane.
