I'm working on a low-res retro FPS, and doing the art myself.  Now I'm not really an artist, and don't have much experience or knowledge about workflow for creating game assets.  In other projects I've just edited stock photos, or figured out other ways around texture creation.

So I'm wondering how I should approach texture creation.  The game is going to be level-based, and I don't really know what sort of textures I will be needing yet.  My plan is to just make a bunch of them and go from there.  But should I be trying to make "tilesets" of different themed textures, or will my scattershot approach be ok if I just try to make sure the textures fit together moderately well?

EDIT: just realized this should have probably gone in the art subforum.  Sorry.
