i like that it looks like something from actual snes
i guess you need background to show how it looks in a context of a game.

I like your colour choices, really nice palette. Smiley
I agree with you on the shading though, you've got some wicked banding, perhaps dither a little to break it up?

Ha.  I can't really contribute more than 'I like this'.  Maybe create a background for it like someone said so we can see the sprites as they would appear during gameplay?

About critique part, I think walking mecha guy's top part is a bit too static and floaty for two legs movement, plus I can't really get, is it moves backward or forward. Something feels not quite right. Maybe you should revisit it to be more readable and maybe more shakey? On the other hand it probably better to see it moving on the ground first.
Somehow it gives me feeling that it hangs in the air and while uses its legs not really walk. Like it could have more weight maybe?

what does everyone think of this thing? I feel the shading on the lower section isn't quite that great.

This style of shading for the ship might be a problem if you need to rotate the asset and you'll rotate the shadow, too.  Might I suggest that you use darker shades around the edges and make it brighter on the top? It will probably look a little more flattened or too linear but works for asset rotation.
