Love it, love WaDF and Knitt. But now after seeing this on the front page and the Insanely Twisted Planet preview I'm a little disheartened with one of my current projects as it's using pretty much the same graphical style and integrating a physics engine too. I've no doubt Niffla's will ship way before I do and create a much better game and consequently I'm going to look like a blood sucking twat... http://mooktown.blogspot.com/search/label/Legend%20of%20MonkeySo, now what do I do? Do I, a) scrap what I've been doing for the last 2 months, or b) carry on and aim to make it betterer than it was going to be previously?

You make a great game and don't give a shit of what others say. End of discussion. Discuss.

Blade Warrior beat you both! ( youtube) Hmm actually, never mind, it looks like a pretty bad game.

woah, thanks Alec! knowing there is prior art as far back as the amiga makes me feel a lot better about continuing with legend of monkey! At least I hope I don't make a game as terrible as blade warrior, which I'm sure was probably alright back in the day.

Journey to the West rocks! I concur, just go for it. Graphical style + physics does not a game make.
Make it betterer.

If you're going to make a game it's usually best that you do something for yourself as well as for others (or sometimes just for yourself period). That way you can finish the game even if there is already another out there which is practically a carbon copy, and not feel bad about it. If you really want to compare it to others, though, then just make it better. Or betterer. Maybe betterestest.

I was saying in the irc channel that platformers with silhouetted foreground and moody/atmospheric backdrops are rapidly becoming an indie cliche But hey, it's probably because it looks really cool, so I concur: go for it.

think I over-reacted actually, in any case it looks like mine would play more like an advanced version of the game Alec pointed out than a nifflas game

Phoo... i guess it really is becoming a trend . papamook, i'm right with you. I felt the same when i saw Nifflas' new creation and for the first time since i started on my current game, i felt like scrapping it. But there's no way i'm throwing five weeks down the gutter because of a new trend. PS: you really can tell what's going in the game when it's full screen... and the background color will be changeable.

Not to make you guys feel even worse, but... Remember Limbo? Seriously, though, gustav, your game looks amazing and I very much doubt anyone will confuse it for any of these games. And the concept of silhouettes is nothing new. It's just a visual mechanic. Not even a style, really. All of you have your own styles. You have nothing to worry about. Just don't clone Cave Story LOL.

Okay, so what the fuck IS limbo? it just seems to have cropped out of goddamn nowhere, and now I've been taken back to that site by various uninterlinked websites.

real art looks like the mona lisa or a halo poster and is about being old or having your wife die and sometimes the level goes in reverse

It's an artist's concept for a game. As far as I know there's nothing more than that.

All of your game must be finished.
Limbo must be made as well.

Well this looks more like night, than really a silhouette style. But yeah, papamook, definitely keep up with your game. I think your landscapes and backgrounds have a very own style and, like someone said before me, graphics and physics don't make a game. You will probably have to endure some comment trolls, but I think the majority won't pick on what is trend and whatnot, if the gameplay is well developed.
